ANGOLA, Ind. – The Calvin University women's tennis team won 6-1 at Trine University on Wednesday to earn its third straight win in MIAA play.
Calvin (5-6, 3-1 MIAA) won the doubles point by taking two of the three matches, and then won five of the six doubles contests against Trine (14-5, 2-4 MIAA) to secure the team win.
The two-doubles team of
Tessa Holman (Washington, Mich./Romeo) and
Julia Hooker (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) won 6-1 and three-doubles team of
Rachel Grissom (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) and
Elise Norman (Kalamazoo, Mich./Lakeview) won 6-3 to give Calvin a 1-0 overall lead in the match.
The Thunder won the point at one-singles, but Calvin won the next five matches to secure the overall win.
Ryan Morey (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) won in two-singles 6-1, 6-4. Holman (6-4, 6-2),
Ana Ornellas (Londrina, Brazil/Colegio Saber) (6-4, 6-2) and Hooker (6-0, 6-2) also earned wins in straight sets in the 3-5 spots in the line-up, and
Sabrina Lopez (Steger, Ill./Illiana Christian) won 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-5) in a third-set tiebreaker to close out the match and give the Knights their sixth point.
