NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Today the Calvin women's lacrosse team picked up a win on the road against the Belles of Saint Mary's to improve to 10-5 overall and 4-1 in MIAA play.
Â
Calvin got things rolling early tonight as sophomore
Delaney Johnson (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake) found the back of the net just two minutes into the game. Junior
Jessica Eenigenburg (Norton Shores, Mich./Western Michigan Christian) chipped in a goal of her own two minutes later before senior duo
Jacey Smith (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) and
Morgan Bethard (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt) both recorded a goal before the end of the quarter to give the Knights a 4-0 lead.
Â
The Belles bounced back in the second quarter when they outscored Calvin 3-2 with Eenigenburg and sophomore
Riley Cornwell (Fishers, Ind./Heritage Christian) being responsible for the two Knights goals. After one half of play, Calvin out shot Saint Mary's 24-9 and held a 6-3 lead.
Â
In the second half, the Knights really asserted their dominance as they scored six straight unanswered goals to stretch their lead to 12-3. Saint Mary's slipped through Calvin's defense late in the fourth quarter for their only goal of the half before sophomore
Naomi Winiarski (Naperville, Mich./Neuqua Valley) found the back of the net to once again shut-down the Belles momentum. Freshman
Celene Trewyn (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) rounded out the Knights scoring for the day when she scored her third goal of the season and Calvin walked away with the commanding 14-4 victory.
Â
Calvin finished the game out shooting the Belles 44-24 while also snagging thirteen draw controls compared to Saint Mary's ten. Bethard finished with three goals while Eenigenburg and Johnson each finished with two. Winiarski, Trewyn, Cornwell, Smith,
Courtney Putnam (South Lyon, Mich./South Lyon), and
Audrey Booher (Fishers, Ind./Heritage Christian) each chipped in one goal apiece.
Â
COACHES COMMENTS: "I'm proud of the team's effort tonight," said head coach
Blake Boehm. "Our defense led the way and gave us the momentum we needed to work through things offensively. We hit our stride in the 2nd half and maintained control through the duration."
Â
UP NEXT: The Knights will be back in action on Friday, April 17th when they welcome the Scots of Alma College to Zuidema Field for a 7 PM MIAA match up.
