CASSELBERRY, Fla. – The Calvin University women's tennis team opened its spring break trip to Florida with a 7-0 sweep of Covenant College (Ga.) on Monday at Red Bug Park.
Calvin (1-4) opened the match by taking two of the three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. The two-doubles team of
Julia Hooker (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) and
Tessa Holman (Washington, Mich./Romeo) won 7-5 while the three-doubles team of
Rachel Grissom (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) and
Ana Ornellas (Londrina, Brazil/Colegio Saber) won 6-2. Covenant (2-6) won the one-doubles match over the Calvin team of
Marina Ribeiro (santos Sal Paolo, Brazil/Santa Cecilia) and
Ryan Morey (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) 7-5.
After winning the doubles point, the Knights won all six singles matches in straight sets.
Morey (6-2, 6-4) won at the top of the line-up, followed by Holman (6-1, 6-2), Ornellas (6-1, 6-0), Hooker (6-2, 6-0),
Sabrina Lopez (Steger, Ill./Illiana Christian) (6-1, 6-1) and
Elise Norman (Kalamazoo, Mich./Lakeview) (6-3, 6-2) to round out the top six.
NEXT UP: Calvin women's tennis will return to action on its Florida trip on Wednesday, March 11, when it plays Hillsborough Community College at 10:00 AM in Tampa, Florida.
