CASSELBERRY, Fla. – The Calvin University men's tennis team lost the first match of its Florida spring break trip 4-3 to Covenant College (Ga.) on Monday.
Covenant (6-2) earned the all-important doubles point thanks to a 3-0 sweep of the Calvin (0-4) teams by the scores of 6-2, 6-2 and 6-4 to take a 1-0 lead to start the match.
In singles, Calvin scored straight-sets wins by
Rodrigo Alipio (Santos, São Paulo, Brazil / COC Universitario) in one-singles (7-5, 6-2),
Felipe Sartori (Estr. Basiléia / Colégio Giusto Zonzini) in three-singles (6-4, 7-6 (7-5)) and Mario Neto (Boa Vista, Brazil / Reino) in five singles (6-3, 6-3), but Covenant earned wins in the other three singles matches in order to secure the over 4-3 win.
NEXT UP: Calvin men's tennis returns to action tomorrow (Tuesday, March 10) when it plays in matches against Augustana University (S.D.) and University of Northwestern (Minn.) at the USTA National Campus in Orlando Florida. The first match is scheduled to start at 7:00 A.M., and the Northwestern match is scheduled to start at 6:30 PM.
