ORLANDO, Fla. – The Calvin University men's tennis team split two matches at the USTA National Campus on Tuesday.
Calvin (1-5) dropped the first match 6-1 to Augustana University (S.D.) (2-6) in the morning before defeating University of Northwestern-St. Paul (3-8) Tuesday night.
Match 1
The Knights battled hard against NCAA II Augustana but could only muster one point to show for their efforts in a 6-1 defeat.
Augustana won the doubles point by winning those three matches 6-2, 6-3 and 6-3.
In singles,
Tanner Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) overcame a first-set defeat to win in a third-set tiebreaker 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7). The Vikings won the other five singles matches in straight sets.
Match 2
Calvin earned its first win of the 2025-26 season with a 7-0 sweep of Northwestern in its night match against the Eagles.
The match started strong for the Knights as they earned the first point with a sweep of doubles competition. The one-doubles team of
Rodrigo Alipio (Santos, São Paulo, Brazil/COC Universitario) and Mario Neto (Boa Vista, Brazil/Reino). The two-doubles duo of
Felipe Sartori (Estr. Basiléia/Colégio Giusto Zonzini) and
Diego Castellanos (Tarija, Bolivia/La Salle Tarija) won in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-4), and the three-doubles combo of
Caleb Bartels (Loch Lloyd, Mo./Kansas City Christian) and Warners won 6-2 to complete the sweep.
In singles competition, Calvin won all six matches in straight sets. Alipio led off the line-up with a 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) win in a second-set tiebreaker. Bartels won in two-singles 6-3 and 6-0, followed by Sartori (6-1, 6-0), Castellanos (6-2, 6-1), Neto (6-3, 6-1) and Warners (6-1, 7-5) each earning wins.
NEXT UP: Calvin men's tennis will return to action on Friday, March 13, when it plays matches against Connecticut College and Carthage College. The Knights will face Connecticut at 7:30 AM on the USTA National Campus before facing Carthage at 3:30 PM at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Florida.
