Calvin Men's Lacrosse Remains Unbeaten With 13-10 Win Over Carthage

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Calvin moved to 5-0 on the season with a 13-10 win over Carthage Saturday afternoon at Calvin Soccer Stadium. The win came on the heels of an exciting 14-13 overtime win over the College of Wooster Friday night as the Knights finished off a 2-0 weekend.

Calvin led 7-5 at halftime and outscored the visiting Firebirds 5-3 in the third quarter to build a 12-8 lead and take control of the game.

Junior Jordan Warners (Orange, Ca./Crean Lutheran HS) had a big day with four goals, an assist and five points. He was also credited with five ground balls and one caused turnover.

Senior David Blackmon (Wheaton, Il./Wheaton North HS) also had three goals and caused two turnovers in the win.

Calvin jumped out to a 2-0 lead on first quarter goals from junior Riley DeSarbo (Monroe, Mich./St. Mary's Catholic Central) and freshman Braylon Moore (Rockford, Mich./Rockford HS). Blackmon scored his first goal of the game in the opening minute of the second quarter, converting a feed from junior Teddy Hollebeek (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) to make it 3-0 Calvin.

Carthage came back to tie the game 4-4 and again at 5-5. DeSarbo and Blackmon scored the final two goals of the first half however to give the Knights a 7-5 halftime advantage.

Warners and Blackmon scored early goals in the third to give the Knights a 9-5 lead. Warners scored on an unassisted rush with Blackmon scoring off an assist from senior Braden Carpenter (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville HS). The assist by Carpenter bumped his career point total to 100 as he became the 11th player in Calvin men's lacrosse history to hit the century mark for a career.

Carpenter later ignited a 3-0 Calvin scoring run with sophomore Colin TeBrake (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview HS) and Warners also scoring in the quick surge.

Freshman Hudson Thiemann (Plano, Tx./Plano Sr. HS) scored early in the fourth off a pass from DeSarbo to build a 13-9 Calvin lead. Carthage scored with 3:16 left but it was not enough as the Knights sealed the win.

DeSarbo finished the game with two goals, an assist and three ground balls. Carpenter had a goal, an assist and two ground balls. Junior Drew Garrison had six ground balls and caused two turnovers. Senior Ben Dilly (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg HS) had four ground balls and caused two opponent turnovers. Junior Jackson Engbers (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) also had two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Moore had a goal, an assist and a ground ball. Junior Sawyer Richards (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville HS) had two ground balls and one caused turnover.

Senior faceoff specialist Nate Hanson (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North HS) had another superb day in the circle, winning 21 of 25 faceoff opportunities and scooping up 14 ground balls.

Senior Soren Thiemann (Plano, Tx./Plano Senior HS) came up with 11 saves in goal for the Knights to record his fifth victory of the season.

COACHES COMMENT: "Great team win today," said Calvin head men's lacrosse coach Dave Hoger. "We knew today would be a challenge after a late and emotional win last night. The guys did a great job rallying and remaining focused. I'm proud of them and the work our whole team put in this week to prepare for these two great teams. We're excited to get some rest tomorrow and then head out to Colorado to face two great opponents next week."

NEXT UP: Calvin will travel to Colorado next week for a pair of games on its spring break week. The Knights will face St. Joseph's College of Maine next Thursday at 12:30 p.m. (MT) on the campus of Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
