COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Calvin improved to 6-0 on the season with an 11-8 win over St. Joseph's College of Maine. Thursday's game marked the opener of Calvin's spring break trip to Colorado.
Calvin led 5-4 at halftime and 7-5 at the end of three. Calvin outscored the Monks 4-3 in the final period to pull away for the win.
Senior
David Blackmon (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North HS) put the Knights on the board with a goal 1:27 into the contest off a feed from senior
Braden Carpenter (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville HS). St. Joseph's (3-3) equalized four minutes later but an assisted goal by Calvin junior Riley DeSarbo (Monroe, Mich./St. Mary's Catholic Central) with 59 seconds left in the quarter lifted the Knights into a 2-1 lead.
St. Joseph's tied the score at two early in the second quarter but Calvin responded with goals from junior
Jordan Warners (Orange, Ca./Crean Lutheran HS), junior
Teddy Hollebeek (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) and sophomore
Colin TeBrake (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview HS) to build a 5-2 lead. St. Joseph's scored the final two goals of the half including one with 15 seconds left to creep within one at intermission.
The Monks tied the game 5-5 on a goal early in the in third period but Calvin responded with goals from Blackmon and freshman
Braylon Moore to take a 7-5 lead. The goal by Moore came on an assist from Blackmon and took place with only 34 seconds left in the third quarter.
Warners scored just 1:50 in the fourth for an 8-5 Calvin lead. After St. Joseph's scored, the Knights responded with three unanswered goals to take control of the game at 11-6. Warners scored two of the goals in the surge with freshman
Hudson Thiemann (Plano, Tx./Plano Senior HS) also scoring a goal.
St. Joseph's scored two goals in the final 40 seconds but it proved too little, too late as the Knights claimed victory.
Calvin finished with a 24-19 shots on goal advantage. Senior
Soren Thiemann (Plano, Tx./Plano Senior HS) went the distance in goal for the Knights, making 11 saves and picking up the win.
Warners had four goals, an assist and four ground balls. Blackmon had two goals and an assist. Moore had a goal and an assist as did
Hudson Thiemann and DeSarbo. Hollebeek had a goal and four ground balls.
Carpenter and sophomore
Anson Gorski (Livonia, Mich./Orchard Lake St. Mary's) had two assists apiece with Carpenter causing two opponent turnovers. Junior
Drew Garrison (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) had five ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Senior
Nate Hanson (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North HS) was 11 of 20 in the faceoff circle with six ground balls.
Josh Segura was 2 of 4 on faceoffs with two ground balls.
COACHES COMMENT: "Definitely excited to get a great result today," said Calvin head men's lacrosse coach
Dave Hoger "We had to overcome the travel and being out of routine along with the (mount level) altitude and our guys did a great job battling. We are playing a great opponent on Saturday and we are excited for the test."
NEXT UP: Calvin will face host Colorado College on Saturday in a contest slated to start at 12:30 p.m. (MT).
