GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin University women's tennis team started MIAA play with a 5-2 defeat to Hope College at Huizenga Tennis & Track Center on Saturday.
Hope (7-5, 2-0 MIAA) started strong in doubles and then won the first four matches in singles to top Calvin (2-6, 0-1 MIAA) on the indoor court.
The Flying Dutch earned the first point of the day in doubles thanks to a sweep of the three matches by the scores of 7-5, 6-3 and 6-4.
In singles, the Knights earned a pair of wins from the bottom two positions in the line-up.
Julia Hooker (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) won five-singles 6-3 and 7-5, while
Sabrina Lopez (Steger, Ill./Illiana Christian) won her six-singles match in a third-set tiebreaker 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6) after dropping the opening set.
The two wins were not enough, however, as Hope earned three straight-set wins.
Ryan Morey (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) took her two-singles match to a third-set in a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 defeat.
NEXT UP: Calvin women's tennis will return to action on Saturday, April 4, when it competes at Alma College in a match scheduled to start at 2:00 PM.
