GAMBIER, Ohio - Today the Calvin women's lacrosse team continued its non-conference schedule when it fell to the Owls of Kenyon College on the road. After today's game the Knights moved to an overall record of 5-4.
Â
The first period belonged to Kenyon as they outscored the Knights 4-1 in the opening fifteen minutes. Calvin's only goal came from senior
Jacey Smith (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) in the ninth minute.
Â
Senior
Audrey Booher (Fishers, Ind./Heritage Christian) and sophomore
Delaney Johnson (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake) each found the back of the net for Calvin in the second period as the Knights worked to dig themselves out of the hole. However, the Owls notched two goals of their own before halftime and Kenyon headed into the break with a 6-3 lead.
Â
Johnson recorded her second goal of the day to open the second half before Kenyon answered back with a stifling 5-0 scoring run. Junior
Ainsley Gothard (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) and senior
Morgan Bethard (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt) both scored late in the third period, but it was the Owls who headed into the final period of play with a commanding 13-7 advantage.
Â
Despite Bethard adding to her goal total in the fourth period the Knights were unable to overcome the deficit as they eventually fell to Kenyon 8-15. The Owls out shot Calvin 39-31 while also snagging 28 ground balls compared to the Knights twenty-one.
Â
Johnson and Bethard each finished with two goals while freshman
Megan Gibbs (Perrysburg, Oh./Perrysburg) had a team high three ground balls. Sophomore
Corinne Plumb (St. Louis, Mo./Westminster Christian Academy) led the way with four draw controls while junior
Alex Petrusha (Milford, Mich./Milford) and Gibbs both finished the game with two caused turnovers. In goal, junior
Hannah Rizzo (Waterville, Ohio/Anthony Wayne) recorded fourteen saves while freshman
Katie Dixon (Fishers, Ind./Hudsonville) chipped in one.
COACHES COMMENTS: "Hopefully this game will be a reminder for us of what happens when we play undisciplined, reckless lacrosse," said head coach
Blake Boehm. "Today we showed a general lack of awareness and composure. We didn't value our possessions or stick to our game plan. It wasn't a lack of effort, but rather a lack of efficiency and unity in our efforts. It's a frustrating lesson to learn. I know the team wanted the win, it just wasn't our day."
Â
UP NEXT: The Knights will be back in action on Saturday, March 28th when they travel Ada, Ohio to take on Ohio Northern at 1 PM.Â
