ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – The Calvin University women's tennis team closed its spring break trip in Florida with a 6-1 win over Carthage College on Friday.
Carthage (6-8) won the doubles point, but Calvin (2-5) won all six singles matches in straight sets to earn the win.
The Firebirds won two of the three doubles matches to take a 1-0 overall lead, with Calvin getting the win thanks to the three-doubles team of
Rachel Grissom (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) and
Ana Ornellas (Londrina, Brazil/Colegio Saber) winning 6-4.
The Knights came back strong in singles play, however, winning all six matches in straight sets to earn the 6-1 overall win.
Ryan Morey (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) won in one-singles 6-2 and 6-3, and
Tessa Holman (Washington, Mich./Romeo) followed with a 6-4 and 6-0 win in two-singles. Ornellas (6-4, 6-1) won in three-singles.
Julia Hooker (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) won four-singles 6-4 and 6-2, followed by
Sabrina Lopez (Steger, Ill./Illiana Christian) winning 6-0 and 6-0 in five-singles and
Elise Norman (Kalamazoo, Mich./Lakeview) rounding out the line-up with a 7-6 and 6-2 win.
NEXT UP: Calvin women's tennis will return to action on Saturday, March 28, when it opens MIAA play by hosting Hope College.
