COLORADO SPRINGS, Co. – Calvin suffered its first defeat of the season on Saturday, falling at Colorado College 15-7.
Calvin and Colorado College are both now 6-1 on the season.
The host Tigers put the Knights on their heels early, leading 5-1 after one period of play and then outscoring Calvin 4-1 in the second period for a 9-2 halftime lead. Colorado scored the first five goals of the contest.
Bly Johnson scored for Calvin in the first period with junior
Jordan Warners (Orange, Ca./Crean Lutheran HS) scoring for the Knights in the second period.
Colorado College went on a 3-1 run to open the second half to build a 12-3 lead to put the game out of reach. Warners scored again in the third quarter. Senior
Braden Carpenter (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville HS) scored twice for the Knights in the fourth quarter with senior
David Blackmon (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North HS) also scoring for Calvin.
Warners finished with two goals and a caused turnover. Carpenter had two goals and two assists. Blackmon, Johnson and sophomore
Anson Gorski (Livonia, Mich./Orchard Lake St. Mary's) all had one goal apiece. Sophomore
Colin TeBrake (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview HS) had two assists. Junior
Drew Garrison (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) had five ground balls and caused three opponent turnovers. Junior
Duncan Billings (North Barrington, Ill./Carmel Catholic) caused two opponent turnovers. Senior
Nate Hanson (Naperville. Ill./Naperville North HS) was 9 of 22 on faceoffs and collected three ground balls.
Senior
Soren Thiemann (Plano, Tx./Plano Senior High School) had a career-high 23 saves. Colorado College outshot Calvin 50-42.
COACHES COMMENT: "We ran into a great and experienced today," said Calvin head coach
Dave Hoger. "I'm proud of the way our guys battled and struggled together through the adversity. We will grow from this experience and are excited to get back home and continue to get better next week."
