Calvin Women's Track & Field Repeats as MIAA Indoor Champions

RESULTS

ANGOLA, Ind. – The Calvin women's track and field team powered its way to its second straight MIAA Indoor title on Saturday. The Knights finished the 17 event competition with 220 points, 55.5 points ahead of second place Hope and more than 80 points ahead of third place Trine.

Event championships and MIAA and school records were numerous on Saturday as the Knights flashed gold both in the field and on the track.

Calvin opened the day with a morning triple jump record and a pile of points. Freshman Dasha Mason (Graham, WA/Graham Kapowsin) captured first place with an MIAA and Calvin record leap of 38-10 ½. The leap came on her sixth and final attempt of the competition and moved her from second and into first place. The jump surpassed the previous MIAA record of 37-4 set by Cianna Brown of Albion in 2022 and surpassed her own school mark of 38-9 ¾ set earlier this year. Her record jump also ranks fifth in Division III women's indoor track and field this season. Mason was part of a 1-3-6-8 Calvin finish in the event with sophomore Alina Veltkamp (Lynden, Wash./Lynden Christian HS) taking third with a career-best jump of 36-0 ¼, freshman Caralee Schipper (Mount Brydges, Ontario/Strathroy District Collegiate Institute) sixth (34-0 ¾) and freshman Emily DeJonge (Renton, Wash./Bellevue Christian HS) placing eighth with a career-best leap of 33-11 ½. The group of Calvin finishes was worth 20 points on the scoreboard.

The Knights then went 1-4 in the shot put with sophomore Ella Easterling (Norton, Oh./Norton HS) taking the league title with a career-best mark of 40-2. Sophomore Lily Burns (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) was fourth with a career-best mark of 37-3 ¾. Easterling joins Bethany Love (2016) as just the second Calvin shot put champion at the MIAA Indoor Championships.

Calvin also snared nine points in the pole vault. Senior Katie Seinen (Jenison, Mich./Unity Christian HS) took second (10-6 ¾) with junior Bethany Simons (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) sixth (9-7).

The Knights picked up seven points in the mile run with junior Hailey Erickson (Arlington Heights, Ill./Prospect HS) fifth (5:12.13) and freshman Ayla Holben (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt HS) sixth (5:12.26).

The Knights then began to sizzle. Senior Mia DeJonge (Bellevue, Wash./Bellevue Christian HS) led a 1-2-6 Calvin finish in the 60 meter hurdles with a first place time of 8.92. The time was an MIAA and Calvin record and good for 28th place on the NCAA III Indoor performance list. It broke the previous MIAA record of 8.94 set by Hailey Livingston of Trine in 2022 and her own Calvin record time of 8.93 set earlier this year. It marked her second straight MIAA Indoor title in the race. Sophomore Cadence Drougal (Rockford, Mich./Rockford HS) also cooked across the sticks, taking second with a career-best time of 9.05 that ranks 50th on the NCAA III Indoor performance list. Easterling was sixth in 9.35.

In the 400 meters, freshman Alison Bailey (Petoskey, Mich./Petoskey HS) was second in 59.06 with sophomore Jessica Bossenbroek (Holt, Mich./Holt HS) fourth in 59.68.

Graduate student Sydney Radigan (Portland, Ore./St. Stephen's Academy) followed with an epic performance in the 60 meter dash, winning the race in an MIAA and Calvin record time of 7.57. She edged Hope's Sara Schermerhorn for the win with Schermerhorn also surpassing the previous MIAA record of 7.68 set by Albion's Avery Campbell in 2024 with a time of 7.61 in Saturday's final. Freshman Rayn Rutley (Fenton, Mich./Fenton HS) was sixth (7.975) and freshman Kaitlyn DiMaggio (Dearborn, Mich./Dearborn HS) seventh (7.977).  The finishes allowed Calvin to record 15 points overall. Radigan is the first individual in Calvin women's track and field history to win the MIAA women's 60 meter dash title.

Sophomore Peyton Ludwig (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Central HS) was third in the 800 meters (2:19.86) with freshman Emma Wierenga (Grafton, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) fifth (2:20.87) for 10 additional points.

Radigan then blew up the track in the 200 meter dash, winning the race with an MIAA and Calvin record time of 23.98, finishing ahead of defending champion Schermerhorn who placed second in a time of 24.37 that also surpassed the previous MIAA record of 24.82 set by Schermerhorn last year. Radigan's time surpassed her own Calvin record time of 24.13 set earlier this season. Her time ranks second on the current NCAA III Indoor performance list and is the third-fastest indoor 200 meter dash time in NCAA III Indoor women's track and field history. Bailey placed third in the race with a career-best time of 25.98 while Mia DeJonge was sixth in 26.35 as the Knights piled up 19 points in the race for the team standings. Radigan's title marked the second time Calvin has won the women's 200 meter dash title at the MIAA Indoor meet with Jenna Dyksen also achieving the feat in 2017.

Sophomore Alexis Ball (Traverse City, MI/Traverse City Central) then finished off a difficult two-day double, placing fourth in the 3,000 meter run in a time of 10:21.67 after finishing second in the 5,000 meters the night before. Freshman Brynn Ellenbecker (Commerce, MI/Walled Lake Northern) also did the difficult 5k/3K double and was eighth in 10:32.81.

The Knights closed out the meet with a second place finish in the 4x400 meter relay, clocking in with a time of 4:04.66. The relay consisted of Bossenbroek, freshman Lola Davey (Cedar Springs, Mich./Rockford HS), sophomore Jillian Tunnicliff (St. Joseph, Mich./St. Joseph HS) and Ludwig.

COACHES COMMENT: "Coming in, this meet was in question but our women's team really stepped up and performed," said Calvin head track and field coach Adam Haldorson. "We got out to a strong start on Friday and kept the momentum going today. Very exciting to see records fall but also exciting to see so many individuals contributing and coming up with personal best performances. I am very pleased to see our team reach this accomplishment. Our enthusiasm and energy was great all weekend."
