ANGOLA, Ind. – The Calvin University women's indoor track and field continued its season at the Mrs. G Invitational hosted by Trine University on Friday.
In a strong performance, the Calvin women recorded two first-place finishes and notched nine results that landed in the Calvin all-time indoor top 10 list, including one time that matched a school record.
The record came from
Mia DeJonge (Renton, Wash./Bellevue Christian), who matched the Calvin indoor record in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.94 to take second place in that event. The time matches the school record set by Jenna Dyksen in 2018 and is currently the top time in that event in the MIAA this season.
Cadence Drougal (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) took third in 9.14, followed by
Ella Easterling (Norton, Ohio/Norton) in fifth (9.27) and
Abby Lambers (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Chistian) in seventh (9.36). Drougal's time ranks third on the all-time Calvin list, while Eastlerling tied for fourth and Lambers ranks eighth.
The first win of the day came in the mile, where
Hailey Erickson (Arlington Heights, Ill./Prospect) won the event in a time of 5:16.69. The Knights went 1-2-3-6-8 in the event, with
Emma Wierenga (Grafton, Mass./Whitinsville Christian) taking second (5:18.49),
Alexis Ball (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Christian) finishing third (5:20.82), and
Brynn Ellenbecker (Commerce, Mich./Walled Lake Northern) and
Kennedi Wood (Comstock Park, Mich./Sparta) finishing sixth (5:23.75) and eighth (5:32.46), respectively.
Ayla Holben (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt) recorded the other individual win for the Knights in the 3000 meters with a time of 10:31.4.
Jonathah Bouwman (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) took third (10:46.5),
Ellia Agar (Grand Rapids, Mich./South Christian) finished seventh (11:01.38) and
Mackenzie Schilthuis (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) finished eighth (11:16.98).
Peyton Ludwig (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Central) took second in the 800 meters with a time of 2:22.25, followed by Erickson in third (2:22.8).
Jessica Bossenbroek (Holt, Mich./Holt) also took home a third-place finish in the 400 meters in 1:00.83.
Alison Bailey (Petoskey, Mich./Petoskey) finished second in the 200 meters in 26.32, followed by Drougal in 12th (27.52) and
Audra Davids (Crown Pointe, Ind./Illiana Christian) in 15th (27.72).
In the last event on the track, the 4x400 relay team of
Lola Davey (Cedar Springs, Mich./Rockford), Bailey, Bossenbroek and Lambers took second in 4:05.05, marking the fourth-fastest time in that event on the Calvin all-time indoor list.
In the field events, the Knights recorded four new entries on the Calvin indoor list, staring with
Lily Burns (Dexter, Mich./Dexter), whose top throw of 14.37 meters in the Weight Throw was good for a sixth-place finish and ranks fourth in program history.
Caralee Schipper (Mount Brydges, Ontario/Strathroy District Collegiate Institute) took fourth in the high jump with a top mark of 1.57, good for a fifth-place tie in program history.
Natalie Hensel (Battle Creek, Mich./Pennfield) took ninth with a top jump of 1.51 meters.
Alina Veltkamp (Lynden, Wash./Lynden Christian) took fourth in the long jump with a top mark of 5.31, good for fourth place on the Calvin indoor top 10. She was followed in the event by
Katelyn DeJonge (Renton, Wash./Bellevue Christian) in ninth with a jump of 4.85.
Easterling also jumped into the Calvin top 10 list into ninth place in the shot put with a top mark of 11.73 meters, which was good for third place at the event. Burns finished 10th with a throw of 10.73 meters.
Schipper led four Knights in the top eight in the triple jump, finishing in fourth with a top mark of 10.28 meters.
Emily DeJonge (Renton, Wash./Bellevue Christian) took fifth with a 10.2 meter jump, while
Katelyn DeJonge finished seventh (9.78 meters) and
Rachel Post (Wycoff, N.J./Eastern Christian) took eighth (8.8 meters)
In the pole vault,
Katie Seinen (Jenison, Mich./Unity Christian) finished fourth with a top height of 3.3 meters.
Laura Robotham (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia) finished ninth at 2.9 meters, followed by
Bethany Simons (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) in 11th place with a height of 2.75 meters.
COACH'S COMMENT: "Our women's team had some very good results today, including one school record and nine marks inside of the all-time list," Calvin head coach
Adam Haldorson said. "That makes for a good day! This was a great opportunity to see most of the MIAA competition at the host site for the indoor conference championships. Looking forward to championship season and just how these ladies climb!"
NEXT UP: The Calvin track and field team will return to action on Friday, February 13, when it competes at both Grand Valley State University and Aquinas College.
