On Monday afternoon the Calvin softball team took a break from preparing for its 2026 season to get involved with its community.
Â
The team worked with Hand2Hand, a local non-profit whose mission is to "deliver nutritious food to students over the weekend and on extended school breaks by mobilizing churches, schools, individuals, and businesses to join together, providing hope and opportunity to thrive."
Â
"We were thrilled to partner with Remembrance Church and Hand2Hand for a second year and give back to such a great cause," said head coach
Becky Hilgert. "Remembrance Church does a lot of work with Hand2Hand and our alumni
Lily Gaastra's parents Stephanie and Greg Gaastra are the organizers at the church so that is how we got connected to the cause."
Â
The team spent some time packaging meals, Valentine's Day treats and colored cards to go in the meal bags that would eventually be delivered to students.
Â
"Service is one of our eight team virtues that we are trying to live out as a program and in our daily lives, and this certainly was a great opportunity for our team members to come together and focus on the needs of others," Hilgert continued. "It was our ultimate goal to hopefully put a smile on the faces of some young school children and their families during this winter season."
