Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Knights continued their early season non-conference schedule with a commanding 13-9 victory over the Raiders of Milwaukee School of Engineering. With today's win Calvin improved to a 3-0 overall record.
Â
The Raiders drew first blood when they found the back of the net just three minutes into the game. Calvin responded quickly as senior duo
David Blackmon (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) and
Braden Carpenter (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) scored back-to-back goals to give the Knights the lead. Blackmon found the back of the net once more during the opening period however, three more goals from MSOE gave the Raiders a slim one goal lead after fifteen minutes of play.
Â
Looking to take control of the game, the Knights dominated the second period as they outscored the Raiders 7-1.
Jordan Warners (Orange, Calif./Crean Lutheran),
Colin TeBrake (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Northview),
Hudson Thiemann (Plano, Tx./Plano Senior), and
Teddy Hollebeek (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) all got in on the goal scoring action while Carpenter added to his total.
Â
The third period proved to be a low scoring affair for both teams as they only netted one goal apiece and Calvin headed into the fourth period with a 11-6 lead. MSOE tried to make a comeback when they opened the final period of play with two goals to cut the Knights lead down to three goals. However, the Raiders' newly gained momentum was short lived as TeBrake and Warners both found the back of the net to give Calvin a boost and stretch the lead to five. MSOE was able to break through the Calvin defense one more time but the deficit would be too great to overcome as the Knights picked up the 13-9 win.
Â
Calvin out shot MSOE 38-29 while also picking up 41 ground balls compared to the Raiders 34. Carpenter and Warners each finished the game with three goals apiece while TeBrake, Blackmon, and Thiemann all notched two.Â
Â
Senior
Nate Hanson (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) led the team with seven ground balls while also winning 14-23 faceoffs. Senior
Ben Dilly (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg) and junior
Sawyer Richards (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) each recorded two caused turnovers and senior goalkeeper
Soren Thiemann (Plano, Tx./Plano Senior) finished the game with eight saves.
COACHES COMMENTS: "I was really proud of the way our guys played and adjusted in the first half," said head coach
Dave Hoger. "MSOE is well coached and threw some things at us that we weren't expecting and our guys handled that really well. We are young and still learning how to finish games. I'm proud of the way we've started the season and our guys commitment to the process. We have two great opponents coming in next week and I'm excited to get back to work on Monday."
