ALLENDALE, Mich. – The ninth-ranked Calvin University women's indoor track and field team competed one last time before next weekend's MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday at the GVSU Tune-Up meet hosted by Grand Valley State University.
The day featured a number of strong times and marks across the board, including one first-place finish and five new entries into the Calvin Indoor all-time top 10 list.
The first-place finish came in the triple jump, where
Emma Tubergen (Georgetown Township, Mich./Unity Christian) won with a top mark of 10.23 meters while
Rachel Post (Wycoff, N.J./Eastern Christian) took second place at 8.8 meters. Tubergen and Post also finished fifth (4.89 meters) and seventh (4.4 meters), respectively, in the long jump.
Elsewhere in the field events,
Lily Burns (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) finished seventh in the shot put with a top throw of 11.11, moving her into 10th place on the Calvin top 10 list.
Bella Adams (Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview) finished ninth with a mark of 9.68 meters. Burns also finished seventh in the weight throw with a top throw of 13.56 meters, just behind teammate
Mikah Bazuin (Byron Center, Mich./Byron Center) in sixth at 13.65 meters, with
Kate Bruining (Grand Rapids, Mich./South Christian) taking eighth with a throw of 12.05 meters.
Natalie Hensel (Battle Creek, Mich./Pennfield) tied a season-best in the high jump with a top height of 1.54 meters to take fifth in that event, followed by
Gabi Kempf (Macomb, Mich./Lutheran North) in ninth at 1.49 meters.
On the track,
Ava Sanchez-Mustapha (Okemos, Mich./Lansing Christian) had a big day in a pair of events, making the final in both the 60 meters and 60-meter hurdles. Sanchez-Mustapha finished fourth in the 60 meters with a time of 8.09, and her 8.02 qualifying time tied for fourth place on the Calvin top 10. She also placed fifth in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.21, and her qualifying time of 9.17 puts her fourth on the Calvin top 10.
In the same events,
Audra Davids (Crown Pointe, Ind./Illiana Christian),
Rachel Balaraju (Grand Rapids, Mich./Kodaikanal International School) and
Victoria Ekkel (Newaygo, Mich./Fremont) finished 8-10 in the 60 meters, while
Annika DeJong (Stevensville, Mich./Lakeshore) and
Joselyn DeBoer (Hastings, Mich./Thornapple Kellogg) finished ninth (10.12) and 10th (10.22), respectively, in the 60-meter hurdles.
Emerson Nordbeck (Livonia, Mich./Franklin) led the Knights in fourth place in the 200 meters in a time of 26.45, followed by Davids (27.34) in eighth and Balaraju (28.37) in 11th place.
Marcail Schuurmann (Lombard, Ill./Timothy Christian) jumped into ninth on the Calvin top 10 list in the 400 meters with a personal-best time of 1:00.67, followed by DeJong (1:01.93) in 10th,
Trinity Kolka (Sanford, Mich./Meridian) in 11th (1:03.01) and DeBoer (1:05.81) in 13th.
Hailey Erickson (Arlington Heights, Ill./Prospect) led Calvin with a ninth-place finish in the 800 meters in a time of 2:18.59. She was followed by
Robyn Tatko (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) in 16th place (2:27.39) and
Isabella Lingenfelter (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) in 18th (2:31.11).
Emma Wierenga (Grafton, Mass./Whitinsville Christian) finished eighth in the mile in a time of 5:10.76, followed by
Kennedi Wood (Comstock Park, Mich./Sparta) in 13th (5:18.66) and Summer Myrhen (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) in 18th (5:31.51), with all three runners setting new personal bests.
The biggest field of Calvin runners came in the 3000 meters, where
Alaina Smith (Sterling, Ill./Seoul Foreign School),
Mackenzie Schilthuis (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian),
Lilly Harsevoort (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Central),
Brooklyn Springvloed (Byron Center, Mich./South Christian),
Sara Huyser (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and
Ella Walton (Hillsdale, Mich./Hillsdale Academy) finished 13-18.
COACH'S COMMENT: "Today was meant to be a final tune up prior to MIAA Indoors and a final opportunity for indoor races for those not competing next week," Calvin head coach
Adam Haldorson said. "I'm happy to say that people made the most of their competitive opportunities and we saw a bunch of huge performances! Special shout out to our men's throws squad, where almost everyone hit personal records and climbed up the conference standings. This team is ready and primed for some big stuff next week."
NEXT UP: Calvin track and field will return to action on Friday, February 27, when it starts the two-day MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at Trine University.
