BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin University women's tennis team returned to action for the first time in 2026 with a 6-1 defeat at NCAA II Ferris State University.
Calvin (0-3) was playing its first match since October and faced off against a strong FSU (4-1) team in preparation for the upcoming MIAA season that starts in late March.
The Bulldogs earned the doubles point thanks to taking the numbers one (6-2) and two (6-3) matches, but the Knights' number-three team of
Rachel Grissom (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) and
Ana Ornellas (Londrina, Brazil/Colegio Saber) won their match 7-5 in a strong performance.
FSU was able to clinch the match win in singles with five victories, but the Knights got on the scoreboard in number-six singles thanks to a 6-4, 6-0 win by
Sabrina Lopez (Steger, Ill./Illiana Christian).
Tessa Holman (Washington, Mich./Romeo) took her number-three singles match to a third-set tiebreaker before falling 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-4).
COACH'S COMMENT: "It was great to see the women finally put pieces together," head coach
George Rodriguez said. "A big step forward in their development. It was great to see them pull out a couple wins against a great team. We have just seen the tip of the iceberg and I can't wait to see how much more they have in them."
NEXT UP: Calvin women's tennis will return to action on Saturday, February 28, when it faces Denison University in a match at 9:00 on the courts at Kalamazoo College.
