RESULTS
PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The 10
th-ranked Calvin men's swimming and diving team fell at No. 7 Carnegie Mellon in a high-powered dual meet Saturday afternoon. The Knights fell 170-128 to the host Tartars The Knights are now 2-5 in dual meet action with all five defeats coming against nationally-ranked teams including three at the Division II level.
The Knights had several strong performances in Saturday's competition.
Senior
Ryan Halberg (Novi, Mich./Northville HS) led a 1-3-4 Calvin finish in the 1,000 freestyle, winning the race in 9:47.34 with freshman
Evan Haney (Goshen, Ind./Northridge HS) third (9:57.91) and junior
Alex Bergsma (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS) fourth (10:01.58). Halberg placed second in the 500 freestyle (4:45.67) with junior
Andrew Stimpert (Normal, Il./Normal West HS) third (4:48.28) and Haney fifth (4:51.58).
Freshman
Jackson Merkel (Grandville, Mich./Grandville HS) continued his strong first year of collegiate swimming. He led a 1-4-5 Calvin finish in the 100 backstroke with a winning time of 49.33. Freshman
David Gabrielle (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) was fourth (53.11) and sophomore
Logan McKinney (Jackson, Mich./Jackson HS) fifth (54.44). Â Merkel was part of a 1-3-4-5 Calvin finish in the 200 backstroke, winning the race in 1:50.67. Senior
Jacob Ziegler (Toledo, Oh./Saint John's Jesuit HS) was third (1:58.63), McKinney fourth (1:58.76) and freshman
Antoine Douguet (Paris, France/Ecole Diagonale) fifth (1:59.76).
Senior
Charles Platt (Downer's Grove, Ill./Downer's Grove North HS) won the 100 freestyle (45.02) with sophomore
Carter Detweiler (Farmington Hills, Mich./Council Rock North) fifth (48.08). Platt was second in the 50 free (20.77) with freshman
Kellen Morford (Medina, Oh./Medina HS) third (21.26) and senior
Zachary Logan (Byron Center, Mich./Byron Center HS) fourth (21.60). Â Detweiler was third in the 200 freestyle (1:44.23) and Stimpert fifth (1:44.79).
In the 100 breaststroke, Calvin went 2-3-4 with senior
Caleb Gemmen (Mentor, Oh./Mentor HS) placing second (57.67), junior
Josh Krampe (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS) placing third (57.70) and sophomore
Andrew Taulbee (Reynoldsburg, Oh./Reynoldsburg HS) fourth (57.88). Gemmen was second in the 200 breaststroke (2:07.90) with Taulbee third (2:08.11) and Krampe fifth (2:09.96).
Gabrielle placed second in the 100 butterfly (50.50) while Ziegler was fourth in the 200 butterfly (1:55.32). Ziegler was third in the 200 IM (1:57.07) and junior
Logan Yakubowski (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton Area) fourth (1:59.70).
Calvin's 200 medley relay team of Merkel, Gemmen, Gabrielle and Platt took second (1:30.78). The Knights went 2-3 in the 200 freestyle relay. The team of Platt, Merkel, Logan and Morford took second in 1:23.74. The team of junior
Will Bales (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Everett HS), Gabrielle, Detweiler and freshman
Daniel Miller (Arlington, Tex./Arlington HS) took third (1:25.75).
Calvin also piled up points in the diving competition. In the one-meter competition, Calvin went 2-3-4 with sophomore
Carson McIntire (Hamilton, Mich./Hamilton HS) second (176.86), senior
Joshua Ring (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Christian HS) third (165.38) and junior
Addison Van Soelen (Lawrenceville, Ga./Providence Christian Academy) fourth (139.13). Calvin also went 2-3-4 on the three-meter board with Ringer second (160.97), McIntire third (154.88) and Van Soelen fourth (138.98).
NEXT UP: Calvin will conclude its dual meet season next Friday when it hosts rivals Hope for a dual meet at 4:30 p.m. at the Venema Aquatic Center.
