AURORA, Ill. – The Calvin University men's track and field team sent a small group to the Aurora Grand Prix hosted by Aurora University on Saturday.
The Knights recorded two first-place finishes on the day, as well as several strong times on the track and good results in the high jump.
Rhys Bedford (Delton, Mich./Delton Kellogg) scored a first-place finish in the 60 meter hurdles, finishing in a time of 8.43 to set a new personal best. That time also ranks first in the MIAA this indoor season and second on the all-time Calvin indoor track and field top 10 list. Bedford also finished the 400 meters in a time of 54.82.
Simon Vandenbroek (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) recorded the other first-place finish in the high jump, winning with a season-best jump of 1.96 meters that set a new season-best and ranks fourth on the all-time Calvin indoor list and second in the MIAA this season.
Bob Horton (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) finished sixth in the 60 meter hurdles in 8.75, recording the seventh-best time on the Calvin all-time indoor list, and then finished 12th in the 400 meters in 50.42, which ranks fifth in the MIAA this season and seventh on the all-time Calvin list.
Benjamin Habers (Lake Ann, Mich./Traverse City West) was the top Calvin finisher in the 400 meters in a time of 50.19, which ranks third in the MIAA this season and fourth on the Calvin indoor list. He also finished 20th in the 200 meters in 22.76, which ranks in a tie for sixth in the MIAA this season.
Zach Van Baren (Hudsonville, Mich./Covenant Christian) and
Jackson Meyers (Grand Haven, Mich./Allendale) finished 34th (52.91) and 36th (53.12), respectively, in the 400 meters.
Four other Calvin athletes competed with Vandenbroek in the high jump, with
Sam Abdalla (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) and
Eric Barancik (Montrose, Mich./Chesaning) tying for fourth place with a top jump of 1.86 meters. Van Baren recorded a top height of 1.81 in a tie for 13th place, while Bedford jumped 1.76 meters in a tie for 18th place.
COACH'S COMMENT: "It was a fun weekend splitting time between GVSU and Aurora University," Calvin head coach
Adam Haldorson said. "The team performed well at both meets and we saw 15 new top 10 marks and a few close calls on school records. Not a bad way to open the main portion of the indoor season!"
NEXT UP: Calvin track and field will return to indoor action on Friday, January 30, when it competes at Aquinas College.
