Calvin-Hope Women's Basketball Rivalry Set to Renew Saturday Afternoon

The 141st meeting between Calvin and Hope in women's basketball is set to take place Saturday at 4 p.m. inside Hope's DeVos Fieldhouse.

Calvin comes in at 7-4 overall and 2-0 in the MIAA standings. Ranked 9th nationally, Hope is 10-1 overall and atop the MIAA standings with a 3-0 conference record.

Calvin leads the all-time series 72-68 but Hope has won 20 of the last 21 meetings. Calvin snapped a 20-game Hope win streak last February with a 66-62 win over the Flying Dutch in the 2025 MIAA Tournament semifinals in Angola, Indiana. Calvin won 21 games in a row to open the series from Jan. 12, 1966 through Jan. 20, 1979. Since basketball became an MIAA sport in 1978-79, Hope holds a 67-51 series lead and is 52-16 since 2000. Calvin head coach Mark Christner is 1-15 against Hope while Hope head coach Brian Morehouse is 55-23 against Calvin.

Hope won both regular meetings last season, winning 72-64 in Grand Rapids, then winning 77-65 in Holland with the Knights coming back to win in the MIAA Tournament semifinals.

Saturday's contest marks Calvin's second matchup against a nationally-ranked team this week. The Knights upset No. 6 Bowdoin 61-51 on Tuesday in Brunswick, Maine.

In overall games, Calvin leads the MIAA in scoring defense (53.9 ppg) and is third in scoring offense (62.0 ppg). Calvin leads the MIAA in defensive field goal percentage (.332) and third in offensive field goal percentage (.373). Hope is the MIAA leader in scoring average (77.2 ppg) and is ranked third in defensive scoring average (57.3 ppg). Hope is ranked second in the MIAA in field goal shooting (.416) and is ranked fifth in defensive field goal percentage (.384).

Calvin is 26th in Division III in blocked shots per game, swatting away 4.7 opponent shots per contest. Junior Hannah Sall leads Calvin individually, averaging 2.27 per-game which ranks 28th nationally. She blocked a career-high nine shots in a 61-53 win over nationally-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater on November 29.

Senior guard Anna Fernandez leads Calvin in scoring at 15.4 points a game along with 17 three-point baskets. She was a member of the 2025 All-MIAA First Team and the 2025 D3hoops.com Great Lakes All-Region Third Team. She was named a (4th Team) Preseason All-American by D3hoops.com. Senior forward RyAnn Rohrer averages 10.5 points a game along with a team-leading 8.0 rebounds a game. As a sophomore in 2023-24, she was also named to the All-MIAA First Team and D3hoops.com All-Region Third Team in 2024. She missed the 2024-25 season due to injury. Junior forward Hannah Sall averages 9.3 points and 6.7 rebounds a game along with a team-leading 25 blocked shots. Junior guard Katelyn LaRue averages 7.7 points a game and has 8 three-point baskets on the season. She was named to the 2025 All-MIAA Second Team. Junior point guard Chloe Wiegers averages 6.1 points and 2.5 assists per contest.

Hope is led in scoring by sophomore post player Leah Richards who averages 12.6 points a contest. The Flying Dutch have a balanced attack with senior guard Sydney Vis (10.7 ppg), sophomore post Anna Richards (10.0 ppg) and junior wing Maddie Petroelje (9.6 ppg) all averaging better than 8 points per contest. Hope is shooting 36 percent from three-point range. Petroelje has a team-leading 20 three-point field goals to lead the perimeter attack.

Mark Christner is in his seventh year as the head coach of the Calvin University women's basketball program. In seven years as head women's basketball coach at Calvin, Christner has fashioned a won-loss record of 105-53. A 1999 Calvin graduate, Christner played three years of basketball with the Calvin men's basketball program and later served as an assistant coach with both the men's and women's programs. He went on to a 10-year stint as the head men's basketball coach at Waynesburg University (Pa.) before returning to his alma mater in the spring of 2019. He led Calvin to a 18-11 overall record a year ago which included an MIAA Tournament crown and a berth in the NCAA III Tournament. The MIAA Tourney crown was Calvin's first since 2015 while the NCAA III Tourney berth was Calvin's first since 2017.  He has led Calvin to the MIAA Tournament semifinals in his six prior years as head coach. His wife Sara (Plasman) Christner played one year with the Calvin women's basketball program and four years with the Calvin women's softball program

Hope is led by veteran head coach Brian Morehouse who is in his 29th year at the helm of the Flying Dutch program. He has an all-time won-loss record of 742-104 which includes Division III National Titles in 2006 and 2022.
