The Calvin University women's basketball team was voted third in the MIAA Preseason Poll released by the conference on Thursday.
Â
The Knights received 50 total points in the poll while Trine University sat atop with 62 points and six first place votes. Hope College finished in second place with 59 votes and three first place votes.
Â
Last season the team finished with a 16-11 overall record and finished fourth in the MIAA standings. While Calvin will have to replace the 15.9 points per game provided by All-MIAA First Team
Anna Fernandez (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth Christian Academy/Wheaton College), the Knights have many returning weapons including five players who averaged at least 10 minutes per game last season.
Â
Senior power forward
RyAnn Rohrer (Ludington, Mich./Ludington), who was named to the All-MIAA Second Team last season, will look to pick up where she left off after averaging 12.2 points per game and leading the team in rebounds with 7.9 per game.Â
Â
Senior duo
Katelyn LaRue (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and
Chloe Wiegers (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) will return as starters from last season while
Gabby Halliwill (Charlotte, Mich./Lansing Catholic),
Jamie Custer (Galena, Ohio/Worthington Christian), and
Lydia Sall (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) each played significant roles off the bench.
Â
Senior
Hannah Sall (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) will make her return to the court after missing the second half of last season with an injury. Sall was averaging 8.3 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 1.5 rebounds per game through the first twelve games last year.
Â
The Knights will open their season on Friday, November 6th on the road against Mount Union in University Heights, Ohio at 5 PM.
