DELAWARE, Ohio – The Calvin University women's volleyball team finished off a three-match sweep of the MIAA/NCAC Challenge tournament with a pair of four-set wins over Ohio Wesleyan University and Denison University on Saturday at Ohio Wesleyan.
Calvin (5-1) won the opening match against Ohio Wesleyan (3-3) by the scores of 25-14, 30-32, 25-13 and 25-23, and then finished off the sweep with a win over Denison (4-3) by the scores of 25-23, 20-25, 25-11 and 25-18.
Match 1
Calvin opened the day with a 3-1 win over the hosts from OWU.
The Knights hit .500 on the attack in the opening set to take an early 1-0 lead and had chances to take the second set before the Battling Bishops fought off five set points to take the second set 32-30 and tie the match at 1-1.
Calvin answered in the third set with by hitting .438 on the attack with five kills apiece from
Aerin Baker (Sautatuck, Mich./Saugatuck) and
Madison Wiersema (Fremont, Mich./Western Michigan Christian/Arkansas State) to win the set 25-13, and then closed strong to win the fourth set 25-23 on a kill from Baker to finish off the match.
The Knights finished the match with a season-best attack efficiency of .360 and recorded 67 total kills. That total is tied for the most in a four-set match by a Calvin team since 2012. Setters
Grace Spoelma (Caledonia, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and
Delaney Kemp (Frisco, Texas/Frisco Centennial) recorded 29 and 20 assists, respectively.
Baker led the Knights with 21 kills to set a new career high.
Sarah Bradley (Clarkston, Mich./Everest Collegiate) added 15 kills while Wiersema finished with 13 kills.
Lina Kasuboski (Racine, Mich./Union Grove) recorded 12 digs and five service aces.
Match 2
The Knights closed the tournament with another 3-1 win against the Big Red from Denison in the final match.
Calvin once again started strong and held a big lead late in the opening set before holding off a Denison rally to win the set 25-23 and take a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Big Red took the second set 25-20 to tie the match, but it would be all Calvin the rest of the way as the Knights dominated the next two sets to win 25-11 and 25-18 and secure the overall 3-1 win.
Baker once again led the Knights on the attack with 15 kills to go with 13 digs for her second double-double of the tournament. Bradley and Wiersema each finished with seven kills.
The Knights continued their strong serving over the weekend with 13 more aces, led by five from Kasuboski. In three matches at the tournament, Kasuboski finished with 17 total service aces. Kemp led the Knights with 22 assists and added three aces.
