WHEATON, Ill. – The Calvin University women's volleyball team opened the Marilyn Scribner Invitational tournament hosted by Wheaton College with a 3-0 defeat to UW-Stevens Point (UWSP) by the scores of 28-26, 25-19 and 25-20 on Friday night.
Calvin (5-2) did a lot of good things to start the match, but six service errors in the opening set proved costly as UWSP (5-4) was able to scored the final three points to win the set 28-26.
The Knights looked to be in strong position to even the match with an 18-14 lead in the second set, but the Pointers rallied to score 11 of the next 12 points to win the set 25-19 and take a commanding 2-0 overall lead.
Calvin erased an early 4-0 deficit in the third set as the Knights looked to extend the match, but the Pointers once again closed strong with a 5-0 run to end the set and match.
Aerin Baker (Saugatuck, Mich./Saugatuck) led Calvin with 13 kills to go with 11 digs and three blocks.
Emma Ekblaw (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) added seven kills on the attack, while
Mary Boa (Atlanta, Ga./Riverwood International Charter) finished with five blocks.
Delaney Kemp (Frisco, Texas/Frisco Centennial) led Calvin with 16 assists and added 10 digs.
Lina Kasuboski (Racine, Wis./Union Grove) recorded three service aces for the Knights.
NEXT UP: Calvin women's volleyball returns to action tomorrow (Saturday, September 13) for the second day of action at Wheaton College. The Knights start the day with a match against Aurora University at 10:00 AM (CT), followed by a match against Lawrence University at 12:30 (CT).
