DE PERE, Wisc. – Calvin capped off a successful weekend in Wisconsin with a 4-1 victory over 19
th-ranked Gustavus Adolphus Saturday afternoon. After downing host St. Nobert 1-0 on Friday, Calvin came back to the same grounds on Saturday and came away with an impressive three-goal victory over the nationally-ranked Golden Gusties.
The Knights now have three wins on the spin, improving to 3-1-0 on the young season.
Calvin got off on the front foot, scoring in the sixth minute of play as junior
Matt Torrell (Rochester, N.Y./The Charles Finney School) got loose through the right wing and squared a sharp pass into the six-yard box. Sophomore
Colin Nieuwenhuis (Hudsonville, Michigan./Unity Christian HS) was able to beat the goalkeeper to the ball and toe-poke the ball into the back of the net for a 1-0 Calvin lead.
Gustavus Adolphus (3-1-0) pushed for the equalizer but the Knights were able to thwart several scoring opportunities.
With just over two minutes left in the first half,
Zac Brooks (Lone Tree, Colo./Valor Christian ) was able to whip a left-footed shot from the top of the 18-yard box at the goal. The shot by Brooks was saved but the rebound came right to the foot of senior
Hans Pruis (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) who made no mistake in ramming home the wide-open opportunity into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead Calvin carried into halftime.
Gustavus sliced the deficit in half with a goal in the opening four minutes of the second half. Calvin quickly countered in the 57
th minute as the Knights were awarded a free kick from the right wing. Nieuwenhuis launched a curling shot into the box that was deflected to the top of the 18-yard box. Torrell was there to capitalize, whipping in a low left-footed shot that beat the goalie at the near post for a 3-1 Calvin advantage. The goal was the fourth in as many games for Torrell who has scored in each of Calvin's opening four games.
The Knights provided the clincher in the 76
th minute as freshman
Odis Fickel (Holland, Mich./Holland HS) chased down a corner kick and dropped in a cross from the left wing. Brooks was able to find the cross in a scrum of players and head the ball into the top shelf, far post for a 4-1 Calvin lead.
Calvin cruised from there to claim the victory.
