OBERLIN, Oh. – Calvin bumped its win streak to four with a 2-1 victory at Oberlin College Saturday afternoon.
Oberlin (1-5-0) grabbed a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 12
th minute of play. Michael Dolton was able to force a Calvin defensive turnover. His crossing pass into the six-yard box deflected off a Calvin defender and into the net for a 1-0 Yeoman lead.
Calvin (4-1-0) began to mount offensive pressure and broke through for the equalizer in the 31
st minute as junior Will Hornbaker (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) launched a shot that was saved by Oberlin goalkeeper Vince Fortuna but landed right at the feet of junior
Zac Brooks (Lone Tree, Colo. Valor Christian) who made no mistake in depositing the rebound into a wide-open net.
Calvin grabbed the lead early in the second half. Senior
Jonah Meyer-Crothers (Sylvania, Oh./Sylvania Northview HS) was able to give the Knights the 2-1 lead with a wonder-goal in the 56
th minute of play. Junior
Matt Torrell (Rochester, N.Y./The Charles Finney School) set up Meyer-Crothers up by flicking a pass from the right-hand side. Meyer-Crothers was able to meet the Torrell pass off one hop and bend a curling left-footed shot that sailed up and around a diving goalkeeper.
Calvin was able to hold strong from that point to secure the road win.
The Knights finished with a 15-5 shots at goal advantage. Senior
Zac Moore (Pilesgrove, N.J./Woodstown HS) came up with three saves in goal to secure the win.
COACHES COMMENT: "Oberlin made it really difficult for us today," said Calvin head men's soccer coach
Ryan Souders. "They're an exceptionally well-coached side and gave us fits at times. But we will never be mad about 3 points on the road. After digging a hole, the guys found a way, punctuated by that great strike from Jonah. Quick turnaround coming up with a game at home against Cornerstone Tuesday. We'll have to lick our wounds quickly and prepare for a tough match early in the week."
NEXT UP: Calvin will host Cornerstone next Tuesday at 7 p.m.
