High-Powered Offense Powers Calvin Women's Soccer to Senior Night Victory

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - This evening the Calvin women's soccer team celebrated Senior Night by showing off their high-powered offense as they took down the Scots of Alma in commanding fashion.

With tonight's victory the Knights improved their overall record to 5-4 while Alma fell to 7-3.

As the match got underway Calvin didn't wait long to assert their dominance as sophomore Ellery Boeving (Howell, Mich./Howell) collected the ball deep in Alma territory. After beating her defender to the endline, she sent the ball back into the middle of the field where a wide-open Mikaela Waroway (Ann Arbor, Mich./Father Gabriel Richard) calmly sent it into the back of the net to give Calvin the 1-0 lead.

In the twenty-eighth minute, the Knights relentless pressure paid off when a hard foul draw by Boeving earned Calvin a penalty kick. Senior midfielder Mia Judd (Grand Ledge, Mich./Lansing Christian) rose to the occasion as she stepped up and rocketed the ball into the bottom right-hand corner to make the score 2-0.

At the thirty-two minute mark, junior Avery Mrozinski (Milford, Mich./Milford) made her presence known as she added to Calvin's goal total just twenty second after she was subbed into the match.

Heading into halftime, the Knights sat comfortably ahead of the Scots with a score of 3-0 while also outshooting Alma 12-5.

In the second half, the Knights didn't miss a beat as Waroway notched her second goal of the evening off an assist from sophomore Olivia Rawls (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) in the fourty-eighth minute to extend the Calvin lead to 4-0. Sophomore Nora Kucinski (Portage, Mich./Portage Northern) got in on the scoring action in the seventy-fifth minute when she collected a loose ball just inside the eighteen and fired a shot into the top left-hand corner to make the score 5-0.

Senior Kiah Nichols (Hastings, Mich./Thornapple Kellogg) capped off the scoring for the evening with just under ten minutes to go when she scored on Calvin's second penalty kick of the game and boosted the Knights to a 6-0 victory.

Calvin finished the match outshooting the Scots 18-7 while goalkeeper Kalex Dodge (Leslie, Mich./Leslie) was credited with two saves.

After the match the Knights recognized their seniors in a post-match and showed appreciation for all that they have contributed to the women's soccer program during their time at Calvin. This year's senior class included Judd, Nichols, Elie Farrell (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South), Mia Brown (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores), Cece McCarthy (Ypsilanti, Mich./Father Gabriel Richard), and Lucy Iverson (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North).

COACHES COMMENTS: "Very pleased with the effort from our group tonight," said head coach Emily Ottenhoff. "I thought our group came out with good energy and focus. It great to start off conference play with a win."

UP NEXT: The Knights will be back in action on Saturday, October 4th when they travel to South Bend, Ind. to take on the Belles of Saint Mary's. Kickoff is set for 1PM.
