Calvin Women's Soccer Picks Up Dominant Road Win Against Saint Mary's

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Today the Calvin women's soccer team once again showed off their high-powered offense as they picked up a dominant 5-0 win over Saint Mary's on the road.

Calvin wasted no time getting on the board as senior Cece McCarthy (Ypsilanti, Mich./Father Gabriel Richard) collected the ball on the right flank deep in Belles territory in the eighth minute. After taking a few touches toward the endline, McCarthy sent the ball back to the middle of the field where junior Mikaela Waroway (Ann Arbor, Mich./Father Gabriel Richard) finished the play by firing a shot into the top right corner of the net to give the Knights the 1-0 lead.

Ten minutes later, graduate student Liz Williams (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) looked to give the Knights another opportunity as she stepped up to take a corner kick. She delivered an arcing cross into the box where junior Avery Mrozinski (Milford, Mich./Milford) emerged from the mass of bodies to deflect the ball over the leaping Saint Mary's goalkeeper to make the score 2-0.

Calvin put an exclamation mark on the first half when McCarthy got in on the goal scoring action in the twentieth minute off assist from sophomore Olivia Rawls (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) to send the Knights into the break leading 3-0.

In the second half, Calvin kept the pressure on the Belles defense as senior Elie Farrell (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) and sophomore Vivian Nagelkirk (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) each added a goal while Williams and McCarthy both recorded their second assist of the match.

Defensively, the Knights locked down the Belles as they did not allow Saint Mary's to get a shot on goal at any time during the game. When the final whistle blew the Knights walked away with the dominant 5-0 victory and improved to 6-4 overall and 2-0 in MIAA play. Saint Mary's moved to a 6-2-2 overall record while falling to 0-2 in conference play.

COACHES COMMENTS: "Another complete team effort on the road at Saint Mary's," said head coach Emily Ottenhoff. "Credit to our group for coming in focused and with great effort to get us ahead early in the match. Great to get another conference result!"

UP NEXT: The Knights will be back in action on Wednesday, October 8th when they welcome Trine University to Zuidema Field for a 7PM kickoff.
