Calvin Women's Volleyball Falls to Hope in Rivalry Match

HOLLAND, Mich. – The Calvin women's volleyball team saw its seven-game win streak come to an end with a three-set loss at rival Hope Tuesday night. Calvin dropped the match by scores of 25-14, 25-18, 26-24.

Tuesday marked the conference opener for both teams. Hope came into the match ranked 13th nationally while Calvin came in receiving votes in the Division III Top 25 poll.

Hope (12-4 overall, 1-0 MIAA) kept Calvin off balance in set one with a strong service game that forced the Knights to scramble. Hope hit .289 in set one.

In set two, Calvin (12-3 overall, 0-1 MIAA) remained in contact, trailing 16-14. Hope closed out the match on a 9-4 run as its service game again took over.

Set three featured back-and-forth rallies. Hope led 9-6 before Calvin answered with a 5-1 run with freshman Sarah Bradley (Clarkston, Mich./Everest Collegiate) contributing a pair of kills in the run while senior Aerin Baker (Saugatuck, Mich./Saugatuck) had a kill and service ace.

Calvin then fought back from a 17-14 deficit to build a 21-20 lead. Senior Madison Wiersma (Fremont, Mich./Western Michigan Christian) tallied a pair of kills in the comeback while sophomore Delaney Kemp (Frisco, Texas/Frisco Centennial) contributed a service ace to put the Knights on top at 21-20. Hope regained the lead at 22-21 before the Knights tied the set at 22 on a ricocheted ball by junior Jordan Steen (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) that landed on the Hope end for a dramatic kill and point. The set was then tied 23-23 and then again 24-24. Hope scored the final two points however, using a Calvin service error and attack off the Knight block to close out the set and match.

Baker finished with a team-high nine kills to go with one ace, three digs and one assist. Wiersma contributed six kills and freshman Caralee Schipper (Mount Brydges, Ontario/Strathroy District Collegiate Institute) five kills. Bradley had four kills and five digs while senior Emma Ekblaw (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) chalked up three kill, three blocks and four digs.

Kemp came up with 12 kills, nine digs and an ace. Junior Tryna VanderZwaag (Hamilton, Mich./Holland Christian HS) chalked up a team-high 19 digs to go with four assists. Sophomore Grace Spoelma (Caledonia, Mich./South Christian HS) added five assists. Sophomore Ava Epley (Commerce Charter Twp., Mich./Walled Lake Northern) also had four assists.

As a team, Calvin hit just .096 while Hope hit at a .226 clip.

COACHES COMMENT: "I thought we struggled with our serve receive most of the night and a credit to Hope for that," said Calvin head women's volleyball coach Amber Warners. "We were out of system for a good portion of the match and that makes it difficult to set up your offense. Their serving set up their attack and block at the net."

NEXT UP: Calvin will host Trine University in a conference match at 6:30 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.
