GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin University women's volleyball team scored a 3-0 win over Trine University by the scores of 25-13, 25-17 and 25-18 on Friday night at Van Noord Arena.
Calvin (13-3, 1-1 MIAA) was in control from the start as the Knights never trailed in either of the first two sets on the way to the win.
Aerin Baker (Saugatuck, Mich./Saugatuck) was dominant on the attack throughout the match with 17 kills and added four service aces for a Calvin team that finished with a .284 attack efficiency overall.
The Knights raced out to a big lead to open the match as Baker and
Madison Wiersema (Fremont, Mich./Western Michigan Christian/Arkansas State) combined for eight kills in the first set that Calvin won 25-13.
The second set was more of the same, as Calvin got five kills from Baker and three more from
Emma Ekblaw (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) on the way to a 2-0 overall lead with a 25-17 set-two win.
Trine (5-12, 0-1 MIAA) started strong in the third set and held an 8-4 lead that led to an early Calvin timeout, but the Knights answered with a 5-0 run that included two kills and one ace from Baker to regain control before finishing the 3-0 sweep with a kill by
Mary Boa (Atlanta, Ga./Riverwood International Charter) on the final point.
Wiersema finished with eight kills while Ekblaw and Boa each recorded six kills on the attack. Setters
Delaney Kemp (Frisco, Texas/Frisco Centennial) and
Grace Spoelma (Caledonia, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) each recorded 19 assists.
Tryna Vander Zwaag (Hamilton, Mich./Holland Christian) led the way with 12 digs, followed by Spoelma with 11 for her second career double-double.
NEXT UP: Calvin women's volleyball will return to action on Friday, October 10, when it plays against Carthage College on day one of the Calvin Invite at Van Noord Arena at 7:00 PM.
