KANSASVILLE, Wis. – The Calvin University women's golf team had a solid start to the two-day Midwest on Classic hosted by Benedictine University on Friday at Brighton Dale Links Golf Course
 
Calvin closed the opening day in 13th place out of 39 teams with a team score of 332 total strokes.
 
Andrea Diemer (Wyoming, Mich./Calvin Christian) led the charge for the Knights with a terrific opening-round score of 73, tying her with three other competitors for second place out of 227 players at the event. Diemer carded three birdies and played the back-nine in one-under par.
 
Ava McConnon (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe Christian) was next on the leaderboard for Calvin with a round of 85 to put her in a tie for 76th place, followed by Gina Sonday (Portland, Mich./Portland) and Brooke Haney (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) two strokes behind with an 87 in a tie for 103rd place.
 
Kayla Adkins (Springfield, Ohio/Springfield) was the fifth Calvin golfer at the event and shot 91.
 
University of Northwestern-St. Paul finished the day in first place with a score of 303, followed by Aurora University (310) and UW-Oshkosh (316) in the top three.
 
COACH'S COMMENT: "Good stretches of play today were overshadowed by struggles keeping double bogeys off the scorecard," Calvin head women's golf coach Jerry Bergsma said. "We'll need to sharpen up tomorrow to better today's result. We had a wonder performance by Andrea Diemer today – she had great control of her game today and fired a stellar one-over par around."
