Calvin Women’s Golf Wins Heidelberg Fall Invite with Team-Record Score

Results

FOSTORIA, Ohio – The Calvin University women's golf team broke the program's single-round team scoring record on the way to taking first place overall at the Heidelberg Fall Invite tournament on Saturday at Fostoria CC.

The Knights were in strong position in third place overall (out of 16 teams) following Friday's team score of 318 but shaved seven strokes off that total on Saturday to finish with 311 strokes for a two-day total of 629 that held off Hope College's second-place tally of 631 for the weekend.

The 311-team score broke the Calvin women's golf program record for a single round, which was previously set at 314 last season.

Brooke Haney (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) carded three birdies on Saturday to shoot 76 and finish the event with a final score of 154 strokes to tie for fourth place on the final leaderboard.

Andrea Diemer (Wyoming, Mich./Calvin Christian) followed right behind Haney in a tie for sixth place thanks to a Saturday round of 78 and a final total of 155.

Kayla Adkins (Springfield, Ill./Springfield) tied Diemer for the second-lowest round on the team Saturday with a 78 and finished in a tie for 31st place. Ava McConnon (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe Christian) shot 79 on Saturday and finished in a tie for 14th place with a two-day total of 160.

Gina Sonday (Portland, Mich./Portland) scored for the Knights in Friday's round and then shot 88 on Saturday to finish in a tie for 38th place.

The Knights' round of 311 was the lowest of any team on either day of the event and topped the second-lowest round (by Heidelberg) by two strokes on Saturday.

The University of Mount Union followed Hope in third place with a total of 641, followed by Heidelberg (642) in fourth place.

COACH'S COMMENT: "Extremely proud of the whole group for stepping up to the challenge down the stretch and each pulled off crucial shots to secure the win," Calvin head coach Jerry Bergsma said. "It was tight all day long so to be able to finish strong and pull ahead against a good Hope squad was very encouraging for our group. Brooke (Haney) and Andrea (Diemer) were both on the Tournament Team to lead us but everyone contributed to the final result."

NEXT UP: Calvin women's golf will return to action at the two-day Midwest Region Fall Classic on Friday, September 19.
