Calvin Women's Soccer Falls On The Road to University of Chicago

CHICAGO, Ill. - Today the Calvin women's soccer team hit the road to take on the No. 11 Maroons of the University of Chicago.

In the first half the Maroons dominated both ends of the field as they out shot the Knights 15-0. However, senior goalkeeper Kalex Dodge (Leslie, Mich./Leslie) came up big with several saves to keep Calvin in the game. It wasn't until the 43rd minute when Chicago finally snuck one past Calvin's defenses to give the Maroons the 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

In the second half the Knights looked to take on a more aggressive attacking role as they worked to put pressure on the Chicago defense. In the 64th minute graduate Liz Williams (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) lined up to deliver a corner kick for the Knights. She sent in an arcing ball that pinballed off several players before senior Mia Judd (Grand Ledge, Mich./Lansing Christian) redirected it past the Maroons goalkeeper to even the score at 1-1.

Now, with the score all tied up, both teams battled for an advantage as they worked to create scoring opportunities. In the 76th minute the Maroons claimed the upper hand as they were able to score and take the 2-1 lead over the Knights.

With time running out on the clock freshman Alexa Boersma (Caledonia, Mich./South Christian) worked to give Calvin a chance as she got off several shots on goal including one that hit the cross bar. However, the Maroons defense held strong and the Knights ultimately fell 2-1.

Dodge finished the game with six saves as Calvin moved to a 3-3 overall record.

COACHES COMMENTS: "Tough result for us today," said head coach Emily Ottenhoff. "I thought we put together a solid second half but against a top team in the country that just won't cut it. We have a lot of things to work on next week and look forward to getting back to it on Monday."

UP NEXT: The Knights will be back in action on Saturday, September 20th when they travel to Cleveland, Ohio to take on Case Western Reserve University. Kickoff is set for 1PM.
