Calvin Women's Volleyball Sweeps Day Two of Wheaton Tournament

WHEATON, Ill. – The Calvin University women's volleyball team bounced back from a disappointing start to the Marilyn Scribner Invitational Tournament at Wheaton College (Ill.) on Friday with a double header sweep of two strong opponents on Saturday to finish the weekend.

Calvin (7-2) started the day with a 3-0 sweep of Aurora University (6-4) by the scores of 25-22, 25-15 and 25-10, and then finished with a 3-0 win over Lawrence University (11-4) with the scores of 25-10, 25-23 and 25-13.

Match 1

The Knights finished off a tough first set and then cruised the rest of the way to a 3-0 win over Aurora to start the day.

Calvin gutted out the first set 25-22 thanks to three kills apiece from Aerin Baker (Saugatuck, Mich./Saugatuck) and Sarah Bradley (Clarkston, Mich./Everest Collegiate), with Baker securing the set with a kill to score the final point.

It would be all Knights from that point as Calvin broke open an 18-15 second set with seven straight points (six on the serve of Bradley) to take a 2-0 lead and then finished off the sweep with a dominant 25-10 win in the third and final set.

The Knights hit .448 in the third set and recorded a sideout percentage of 77 percent (20 of 26) over the final two sets to take control.

Bradley was the Knights' leader on the attack with 13 kills, followed by nine from Baker and eight from Emma Ekblaw (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton). Delaney Kemp (Frisco, Texas/Frisco Centennial) recorded a double-double with 18 assists and 12 digs. Tryna Vander Zwaag (Hamilton, Mich./Holland Christian) led Calvin with 15 digs.

Match 2

Calvin closed the tournament with another impressive performance to defeat Lawrence 3-0.

The Knights dominated the opening set 25-10 thanks to a .372 attack efficiency while holding Lawrence to -.089 to take a 1-0 overall lead.

Calvin held a small lead for much of the second set before holding off Lawrence down the stretch thanks to another set-ending kill from Baker to send the Knights into the third set up 2-0 in the match.

In the final set, Calvin took an early lead and continued to build until a kill from Madison Wiersema (Fremont, Mich./Western Michigan Christian/Arkansas State) closed the match with a kill that secured the unbeaten day for the Knights.

Bradley once again led Calvin with 10 kills, followed by nine apiece from Baker and Ekblaw. Vander Zwaag led the Knights with 13 digs and added nine assists.

NEXT UP: The Calvin women's volleyball team will return home for it's first matches in Van Noord Arena this season when it hosts next weekend's Calvin Invite. The Knights will face off against Cornell College at 7:30 PM on Friday, September 19, before closing the tournament against Heidelberg University on Saturday at 2:00 PM.
