Calvin Women's Soccer Falls to North Central in Non-Conference Matchup

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Today the Calvin women's soccer team took on North Central College as it welcomed the Cardinals to Zuidema Field for a non-conference matchup.

In the first half, both teams were quick to get things going as shots were launched at goal early and often. The Knights had several good looks but caught a streak of bad luck when sophomore Ellery Boeving (Howell, Mich./Howell) was denied by the post on one possession and graduate student Liz Williams (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) the cross bar on another.

On the other end of the field, the Cardinals offensive efforts paid off when they were awarded a penalty kick in the twenty-six minute. Senior goalkeeper Kalex Dodge (Leslie, Mich./Leslie) took her line but didn't stand much of a chance as the North Central player buried the ball into the bottom right-hand corner to give the Cardinal the 1-0 lead.

In the second half the Knights didn't have any good scoring opportunities until late in regulation when they really upped their offensive pressure. In the seventy-ninth minute Cece McCarthy (Ypsilanti, Mich./Father Gabriel Richard) executed a nice slip pass into the middle where a streaking Mikaela Waroway (Ann Arbor, Mich./Father Gabriel Richard) missed the net just wide. A few minutes later senior Mia Brown's (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores) bending shot off a free kick was close to the top left-hand corner of the goal but ultimately missed wide.

With just two minutes left on clock the Knights put together one last ditch effort when they found a streaking Waroway down the middle of the field. She took one touch into the eighteen-yard box before firing off a shot that went just inches too high and the Knights fell 1-0.

Calvin outshot North Central 17-13 while Dodge finished her evening in goal with four saves. After tonight's game the Knights moved to a 3-2 record.

UP NEXT: The Knights will be back in action on Saturday, September 13th when they travel to take on Chicago University at 1 PM (CT).
