GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin University women's soccer team finished off a strong weekend to start the 2025 season with a 3-1 win over Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) on Saturday at the Calvin Soccer Field.
Calvin (2-0-0) controlled possession for much of the first half and held a 6-2 advantage in shots and 8-0 edge in corner kicks but could not get a goal to show for it as the two teams went into halftime tied 0-0.
The Knights struck quickly to take control in the second half as
Kiah Nichols (Hastings, Mich./Thornapple Kellogg/Delta CC) put the Knights on the board in the 56th minute with her first goal of the season and her first goal as a Calvin player.
Calvin added to the lead in the 65th minute on a goal from
CeCe McCarthy (Ypsilanti, Mich./Father Richard Gabriel/GSVU) off a pass from
Mikaela Waroway (Ann Arbor, Mich./Father Richard Gabriel) to push the lead to 2-0. The goal was McCarthy's second of the season.
MSOE (0-2-0) made things interesting late with a goal in the 85th minute to cut the Calvin lead in half, but the Knights answered with
Alexa Boersma's (Caledonia, Mich./South Chrisitan) first career collegiate goal three minutes later of an assist from
Avary Braman (Byron Center, Mich./Calvin Christian) to give Calvin the final 3-1 margin.
The Knights finished the game with a 17-6 edge in total shots and an 11-4 advantage in shots on goal. Waroway, Boersma and Nichols each recorded two shots on goal.
Kalex Dodge (Jackson, Mich./Leslie) recorded three saves in goal for Calvin.
COACH'S COMMENT: "Happy to get another result today," Calvin head women's soccer coach
Emily Ottenhoff said. "I thought we came out a bit unfocused in the first half but put a much better effort in the second to help lead to the result. Looking forward to a day off tomorrow before we start preparing for our upcoming weekend in St. Louis."
