Five members of the Calvin University men's cross country and track and field teams were named Academic All-District by the College Sports Communicators (CSC) on Tuesday.
Corbin DeBoer,
Bob Horton,
Connor Lubberts,
Mason Schimmel and
Luke Witvliet each earned the award.
Witvliet also advanced to the national ballot is under consideration for CSC Academic All-America honors.
To receive the honor, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore in eligibility and maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 or higher. A student-athlete must also finish in the top 50 in the region in cross country, or the top 50 in the region in the indoor or outdoor track and field season in an individual event.
The Calvin men's cross country team finished the 2024 season with its 37th consecutive MIAA championship and won the regional championship. The men's track and field team finished second at the MIAA Outdoor Championship and third at the MIAA Indoor Championship.
Corbin DeBoer
DeBoer (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) earned CSC Academic All-District for the third straight year. In his graduate year, DeBoer earned All-MIAA First Team honors and finished 15th in the region in the 400 meters with a time of 50.44 during the indoor season.
A graduate student with a 3.84 cumulative GPA, DeBoer graduated with a degree in accounting and was in graduate school this year studying accounting. He is an eight-time Calvin Dean's List and four-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll honoree.
Bob Horton
Horton (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) earned his first career CSC Academic All-District honor after a strong sophomore season in which he was named All-MIAA First Team after winning the 400 meter hurdles in a time of 53.44 that ranked fourth in the region and 31st in the national rankings during the outdoor season.
A history and education major with a 3.75 cumulative GPA, Horton is a four-time Calvin Dean's List and one-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll honoree.
Connor Lubberts
Lubberts (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) was named CSC Academic All-District for the second straight season this year. He won All-MIAA First Team honors during the indoor season after placing 20th in the region in the 400 meters (50.51). He also earned All-MIAA Second Team in the outdoor season with a 49.55 time in the 400 meters that ranked 38th in the region.
A junior engineering major with a 3.67 GPA, Lubberts is a six-time Calvin Dean's List and two-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll honoree.
Mason Schimmel
Schimmel (Grand Rapids, Mich./Covenant Christian) earned his first career CSC Academic All-District honor after a strong sophomore season. He was named All-MIAA First Team in the indoor season and ranked 34th in the region in the 400 meters. He also earned All-MIAA Second Team honors and finished 40th in the region in the 400 meters in the outdoor season.
A business marketing major with a 3.88 GPA, Schimmel is a four-time Calvin Dean's List and one-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll honoree.
Luke Witvliet
Witvliet (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian) earned his second straight CSC Academic All-District honor, and was also a CSC Academic All-American in 2024. This season, Witvliet earned All-MIAA First Team honors in cross country, indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field. He ranked in the top 12 in the region in cross country (second), in three events during the indoor season (third in the 5k, third in the 3k, and 12th in the mile), and also third in the 10k during the outdoor season. He also finished 80th in the nation in cross country, 24th in the indoor 5k nationally, and 23rd in the outdoor 10k.
A senior biochemistry major with a 4.0 GPA, Witvliet is an eight-time Calvin Dean's List and three-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll honoree.
