GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin University women's tennis team put together one of its best performances of the season to date with a 6-1 win over Trine University on Tuesday at Huizenga Tennis and Track Center.
Calvin (11-3, 3-1 MIAA) jumped in front early with a dominant performance in doubles to take the first point of the match from Trine (11-3, 2-2 MIAA).
All three teams won their doubles matches 6-1 to earn the Knights the one point for doubles.
Catherine Grissom (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) and
Marina Ribeiro (santos Sal Paolo, Brazil/Santa Cecilia) started things off in the number one spot, followed on the number two team by
Julia Hooker (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) and
Ryan Morey (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) and the third team of
Tessa Holman (Washington, Mich./Romeo) and
Rachel Grissom (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central).
In singles, five of the six matches went the Knights' way in straight sets to secure the overall win.
Ana Clara Ornellas (Londrina, Brazil/Colegio Saber) (6-0, 6-0),
Catherine Grissom (6-2, 6-0), Ribeiro (6-4, 6-0), Hooker (6-4, 6-3) and Morey (6-0, 6-2) each won in straight sets to score the five Calvin points.
Holman took her match to a third-set tiebreaker but lost 5-7, 7-5, 1-0 (13-11).
NEXT UP: Calvin women's tennis will return to action on Saturday, April 12, when it travels to Kalamazoo College for a match scheduled to start at 11:00 AM.
