KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Calvin University women's tennis team could not complete a comeback in singles play in a 4-3 defeat at Kalamazoo College on Saturday.
Calvin (11-4, 3-2 MIAA) fell behind early as Kalamazoo (10-6, 5-1 MIAA) earned the doubles points and then could not get more than three singles wins late.
The Hornets earned the point in doubles thanks to 6-3 wins in both the numbers one and three matches, and completed the doubles sweep with a 7-6 (10-8) tiebreaker win over the Knights' number-two team of
Ryan Morey (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) and
Julia Hooker (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids).
In singles, the Knights were able to make up ground with three wins in straight sets.
Catherine Grissom (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) won 6-1, 6-4 in number-three singles, while (6-2, 7-5) won her number-five match and Morey won in six-singles 6-3, 6-1.
The Hornets got the three points they needed, however, with wins in the numbers one, two and four matches to secure the overall win.
