GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin University women's tennis team defeated Adrian College 4-0 in its opening round match of the MIAA Tournament on Monday at Strikwerda Tennis Center.
Calvin (14-5) had to work for the point in the doubles as Adrian (9-9) won the number-one match 6-2. The Knights' number-two team of
Julia Hooker (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) and
Ryan Morey (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) won 6-2 to even the score and the number-three team of
Tessa Holman (Washington, Mich./Romeo) and
Rachel Grissom (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) came through with a 7-5 win to secure the doubles point and a 1-0 lead overall.
In singles, Calvin only needed three wins to get the required four points and got them from the numbers three, four and six positions in the line-up.
Catherine Grissom (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) won 6-0 and 6-0, followed by a 6-1 and 6-1 win from
Marina Ribeiro (santos Sal Paolo, Brazil/Santa Cecilia). Morey took home the third win by the scores of 6-3 and 6-3.
NEXT UP: Calvin women's tennis will return to action on Wednesday, April 30, when it travels to Hope College to face the tournament's top seed. That match is scheduled to begin at 4:00 PM.
