GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin University men's tennis team advanced to the semifinals of the MIAA Tournament with a 4-0 win over Alma College in Saturday's first round match at Strikwerda Tennis Center.
Calvin (12-8) opened the match with a strong performance in doubles play to take a 1-0 lead over Alma (4-14).
The Knights' number-one team of
Rodrigo Alipio (Santos, São Paulo, Brazil/COC Universitario) and
Mário Neto (Boa Vista, Brazil/Reino) and number-two team of
Ryan Broek (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) and
Felipe Sartori (Estr. Basiléia/Colégio Giusto Zonzini) both won their doubles matches 6-2. The number-three team of
Tanner Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and
Corwin Kim (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) won 6-4 to finish off the sweep.
In singles, the match ended thanks to three Calvin wins in straight sets.
Alipio won in number-one singles 6-2 and 6-0. Sartori won his number-three match 6-2 and 6-0.
Emmanuel Henao (Medellin, Columbia/Escuela Normal Superior "La Merced") won the fourth point for the Knights in number-six singles 6-2 and 6-1.
NEXT UP: Calvin men's tennis advanced to the MIAA semifinals with the win. The Knights will face Hope College on May 1.
