Calvin Men's Tennis Falls to Hope in MIAA Semifinals

HOLLAND, Mich. - Today the Calvin men's tennis team made the short trip to Holland, Michigan to take on rival Hope College in the second round of the MIAA Tournament.

The Knights got off to a strong start when sophomore Rodrigo Alipio (Santos, São Paulo, Brazil/COC Universitário) and freshman Mario Neto (Boa Vista, Brazil/Reino) picked up a win in the No. 1 doubles match 6-2. Calvin earned the doubled point when freshman Caleb Bartels (Belton, Mo./Kansas City Christian) and sophomore Tanner Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) took down the Flying Dutchmen 6-2 in the No. 3 match.

Alipio extended the Calvin lead when he defeated his opponent in the No. 1 singles match with scores of 6-4 and 7-5. Felipe Sartori (Estr. Basileia/Colegio Giusto Zonzini) gave Calvin another boost when he won the No. 3 match with scores of 6-1 and 6-3. However, Hope wasted no time bouncing back as they claimed wins in the No. 2, No. 4, and No. 6 matches to tie the score at 3-3.

With just the No. 5 match remaining, it turned into a winner take all situation that tipped in Hope's favor after a three-set battle.

COACHES COMMENTS: "This was the best I have seen the guys play this year," said head coach Jon Goorhouse. "They fought through three sets and never gave up. Huge improvement to finish off the year."
