ALLENDALE, Mich. – Calvin concluded competition at the Al Owens Classic on the campus of Grand Valley State University on Saturday and filled the day with several notable performances.
On the track, senior
Thaine Nederveld (Columbus, Oh./Columbus Alternative School) had a big day, taking sixth with a season-best time of 3:52.70, just a half-second off his career-best and good for second on the MIAA performance list.
Calvin's 4x100 meter relay team of freshman
Max Huizinga (Hudsonville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS), senior
Koby VanderWoude (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia HS), freshman
Alex VanSweden (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg HS) and sophomore
Eze Nwachuku took fourth in a season-best time of 42.37 that ranks third on the MIAA performance list.
VanSweden also turned in a season-best time of 11.08 in the 100 meter dash that was good for 14
th place.
In the 5,000 meter run, freshman
Vaughn Meyer (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) was 11
th (15:03.62).
Calvin flashed some speed in the 400 meters. Freshman
Benjamin Habers (Lake Ann, Mich. Traverse City West) clocked a career-best time of 49.92 that was good for eighth place on Saturday and ranks eighth on the MIAA performance list. Junior
Danny Andringa (Pella, Ia./Pella Christian HS) clocked a career-best time of 50.93 that was good for 17
th place while junior
Ethan Sculley (Byron Center, Mich./South Christian HS) was 19
th in a career-best time of 51.13.
In the 200 meters, Huizinga was 17
th in a career-best time of 22.95 while Andringa produced a career-best time of 23.08 for 19
th place. Nwachuku was close behind in 20
th place in a time of 23.10.
In the field events, sophomore
Luke Nguyen (Houston, Texas Carl Wunsche Sr.) continued his strong spring, placing ninth with a season-best mark of 22-0 ¾ in the long jump that was good for ninth place. Sophomore
Connor Johnson (Kingsley, Mich./Kingsley HS) was 13
th in 21-4 ¾.
In the discus, freshman
Carson Arnould (Hudsonville, Mich./Zeeland West HS) was third (146-2).
In the javelin, junior
Colin Jambekar (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. Grosse Pointe North) was seventh (136-6), sophomore
Jarrett Febus (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) eighth (134-1) and freshman
Caleb Bachew (Benbrook, Texas Homeschool) ninth (127-0).
Freshman Petyon Coffey (Greenwood, Ind. Center Grove) added an eighth place finish in the high jump at 5-11 ¾.
Next up for the Calvin men's track and field program will be the inaugural MIAA Championships Combined Events scheduled to take place next Tuesday and Wednesday at the Calvin Track and Field Complex. During the two days of competition, Calvin will host the men's decathlon event as well as the women's heptathlon event. Both events will score places 1-8 and will count in the upcoming MIAA Championships slated for May 1 and 2. The first five events of the men's decathlon will take place on April 22 with competition set to begin at 11 a.m. Day two will pick up on April 23 with events set to begin at 10:30 a.m.
