Calvin Women’s Tennis Closes Strong in 4-3 Win over Wheaton

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Calvin University women's tennis team overcame a 3-1 deficit to beat Wheaton College 4-3 at the USTA National Campus on Thursday.

Calvin (6-1) started strong with wins in two of the three doubles matches. The number-one team of Catherine Grissom (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) and Marina Ribeiro (santos Sal Paolo, Brazil/Santa Cecilia) won 7-6 (8-6), and the number-three team of Tessa Holman (Washington, Mich./Romeo) and Rachel Grissom (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) won 6-0 to secure the one point.

In singles, Wheaton (10-4) won the numbers one, five and six matches in straight sets to take a 3-1 lead in the match.

Needing to win the final three matches to get the overall win, Catherine Grissom won in three sets 6-7 (6-8), 6-0, 1-0 (12-10) to win in three-singles. Ribeiro also won in three sets in 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5) in number-four singles to tie the match 3-3.

In the final match, Ana Clara Ornellas (Londrina, Brazil/Colegio Saber) won in straight sets 6-4, 7-5 to earn the Knights the final point and the win.

The win was the sixth straight for the Knights this season and improved their record to 3-0 on the spring break trip.

COACH'S COMMENT: "The team played very well and fought through tougher matches today than we have seen," Calvin co-interim head tennis coach Angie Goorhouse said. "Always exciting when it comes down to the last match to decide a win or loss."

NEXT UP: Calvin tennis will return to action tomorrow (Friday, March 14) when it closes its spring break trip with a 9:00 AM match against Carthage College at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Florida.
