ORLANDO, Fla. – The Calvin University women's tennis opened its spring break trip to Florida with a 6-1 win over Ursinus at the USTA National Campus on Monday.
Calvin (4-1) took all three matches in doubles over Ursinus (1-2) to secure one point.
Catherine Grissom (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) and
Marina Ribeiro (santos Sal Paolo, Brazil/Santa Cecilia) won 6-3 in number-one doubles.
Ryan Morey (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) and
Julia Hooker (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) won 6-0 in number-two doubles, and
Tessa Holman (Washington, Mich./Romeo) and
Rachel Grissom (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) finished the doubles sweep with a 6-2 win.
In singles, the Knights took home wins in five of the six matches, with all of those wins coming in straight sets.
Ana Clara Ornellas (Londrina, Brazil/Colegio Saber) (6-0, 6-0),
Catherine Grissom (6-2, 6-4), Ribeiro (6-3, 6-2), Hooker (6-0, 6-0) and Morey (6-3, 6-0) took home the five wins. Holman dropped her number-one singles match in a third-set tiebreaker 6-7 (7-1), 6-4, 1-0 (10-5).
The Knights were scheduled to play Franciscan University in the afternoon but that match was rained out.
COACH'S COMMENT: "We're excited to get our first match down in Florida," Calvin co-interim head coach
Jon Goorhouse said. "We only had one rain delay in singles, but they stayed focused to get the win."
NEXT UP: Calvin tennis will return to action tomorrow (Tuesday, March 11) when it plays Central College in Lakeland, Florida, at 12:00 PM.
