GEORGETOWN, Tx. – Calvin opened its spring trip with a 15-10 loss to the Berry College Vikings Monday morning on the campus of Southwestern University.
Calvin stood toe-to-toe with Berry through one half of play, trailing just 6-5 at halftime. Berry (5-1) pulled away in the second half with an 8-1 scoring run to build a 14-6 lead.
Calvin (2-2) rallied four late goals but could not overcome the deficit.
Calvin took a 2-0 first quarter lead on goals by sophomore
Ainsley Gothard (Clarkston, Mich. Clarkston) and senior
Meghan Chang (Clarksburg, Md. Clarksburg). Berry responded with four straight goals to build a 4-2 lead. Chang scored late in the first and another early in the second to tie the game 4-4.
Berry then went up 6-4 before Calvin sophomore
Jessica Eenigenburg (Norton Shores, Mich. Western Michigan Christian) scored on a man-up opportunity to make it 6-5 at halftime.
Berry then went on its 8-1 scoring run in the second half to pull into a 14-6 lead. Junior
Audrey Booher (Fishers, Ind. Heritage Christian) came back with a pair of fourth quarter goals. Chang scored a man-up goal and junior
Morgan Bethard added another in the closing minutes to make it a five-goal final margin of victory.
Chang led Calvin in defeat with four goals, two assists, three ground balls, 12 draw controls and one caused turnover. Booher had two goals, an assist and three ground balls. Bethard, Eenigenburg, Gothard and junior
Jacey Smith (Watertown, Wis. Watertown) all had one goal. Freshman Corrine Plumb (St. Louis, Mo. Westminster Christian Academy) had three draw controls and one caused turnover. Bethard also caused a pair of opponent turnovers.
Sophomore
Hannah Rizzo (Waterville, Ohio Anthony Wayne) had seven saves in goal for the Knights. Calvin held a 30-26 shots at goal advantage.
COACHES COMMENT: "Berry is a fast, athletic and well-coached team," said Calvin head women's lacrosse coach
Blake Boehm. "This was good competition for us. We had a strong start and a strong finish. The team learned a lot today and we're excited to come back stronger on Wednesday."
