GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin University men's tennis team opened the 2025 spring season with a 6-1 win over Aquinas College on Saturday afternoon at the Huizenga Tennis & Track Center.
Calvin (1-2) secured the point for doubles by taking both doubles matches. The number-one team of
Rodrigo Alipio (Santos, São Paulo, Brazil/COC Universitario) and Mário Neto (Boa Vista, Brazil/Reino) won 6-0, while the number-two team of
James Vander Ark (Leawood, Kan./Kansas City Christian) and
Ngozi De Cantuaria (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) won 6-1.
In singles, the Knights took three of the four matches played in straight sets.
Felipe Sartori (Estr. Basiléia/Colégio Giusto Zonzini) won 6-0 and 6-0 in the number-two match.
Ryan Broek (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) won 6-0 and 6-1 in the number-three spot, while
Emmanuel Henao (Medellin, Columbia / Escuela Normal Superior "La Merced") won 6-1 and 6-1 in the fourth spot.
Aquinas (0-4) only brought four players to the match, meaning the two singles matches were won by the Knights by forfeit.
COACH'S COMMENT: "Great opening match for the spring season," Calvin co-interim head coach
Jon Goorhouse said. "We're going to miss playing Aquinas going forward since this is the last year of their program. Now we have every weekend the rest of the month booked with matches and we're looking forward to getting back into the swing of things."
NEXT UP: Calvin men's tennis will return to action on Friday, February 14, when it travels to MSOE for a match scheduled to start at 12:30 PM (CT).
