Calvin Men’s Lacrosse Picked Third in MIAA Preseason Poll

The Calvin University men's lacrosse team was picked to finish third in the 2025 MIAA Preseason Poll released by the conference on Tuesday.

Calvin, under the direction of head coach Dave Hoger, finished third in the conference in 2024 with a 4-2 league record to secure its highest finish in program history.

On the way to that finish, Calvin also set a new program record with 12 wins (surpassing the previous high of 10) and finished 12-6 overall.

The Knights return a number of key contributors from the 2024 season, including All-MIAA performers Christian Coler (Ionia, N.Y./Honeyoye Falls-Lima) on the First Team and Thomas Smith (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./Grosse Pointe South), David Blackmon (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) and Josh Gage (Livonia, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) on the Second Team.

Coler earned All-MIAA First Team honors after scoring 30 goals and adding 16 assists while setting the Calvin single-season record with four game-winning goals. Smith led Calvin with 35 goals, which tied for the fourth-highest single-season total, and ranks second in program history with 86 career goals and fourth with 111 career points. Blackmon scored 27 goals and finished with 39 total points.

Gage returns to lead the defense after causing 31 turnovers in 2024. For his career, Gage ranks third in program history with 92 caused turnovers.

Cole McKenney (Mission Viejo, Calif./Trabuco Hills) also returns to help lead the offense after setting a new Calvin single-season record with 29 assists in only 13 games in 2024. His 57 career assists rank third in program history.

In goal, Corgan Schaumburg (Rockton, Ill./Hononegah) returns as the program's all-time leader in wins (20) and saves (382). Last season, he set the program single-season record with 12 wins and finished with a 9.43 goals against average and .549 save percentage.

Calvin was picked third in the poll with 27 total points. Hope College was the unanimous selection at the top of the poll with 36 points and all six possible first place votes. Albion College came in second with 30 points and one first place vote.

The Calvin men's lacrosse team will open the season on Saturday, February 15, when it hosts Edgewood College at 1:00 PM at the Calvin Soccer Field.
