Calvin Men's Lacrosse Secures 11-10 Road Win at Lake Forest

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The Calvin University men's lacrosse team earned its first road win of the season by the final of 11-10 at Lake Forest College on Saturday afternoon.

Calvin (2-0) was in control for much of the game until Lake Forest (0-2) overcame a four-goal deficit in the second half to tie the score before the Knights held the Foresters off down the stretch to secure the win.

The Knights dominated the start of the game with four unanswered goals to take an early 4-0 lead. Jordan Warners (Orange, Calif./Crean Lutheran) started the scoring in the second minute of play, and Joshua Moyer (Allentown, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic), Thomas Smith (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./Grosse Pointe South) and Jacob Bledsoe (Mission Viejo, Calif./J. Serra Catholic) added goals of their own to give the Knights the early edge.

Lake Forest answered with a pair of goals to end the first quarter, but the Knights went into halftime with a 6-4 lead thanks to goals from Smith and Cole McKenney (Mission Viejo, Calif./Trabuco Hills) to start the second period.

After the Foresters made it 6-5 with almost nine minutes left in the third, Riley Desarbo (Monroe, Mich./St. Mary's Catholic Central) scored to take back momentum at the 7:11 mark of the third quarter, and Smith and Bledsoe followed with goals of their own to push the Calvin lead back up to four at 9-5 with 3:46 left in the third quarter.

The Foresters made their four-goal run to tie the game with 9:28 left in the fourth quarter, but Drew Garrison (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) scored 20 seconds later to put the Knights back on top, and McKenney added an insurance goal with 6:24 remaining to put Calvin in front 11-9.

The second goal from McKenney came up big for the Knights down the stretch, as Lake Forest scored with 90 seconds to play to cut the deficit to one and then had four shots in the final minute to tie (three with a man advantage) before the final buzzer sounded with the Knights securing the one-goal win.

Smith led the Calvin attack with three goals and 11 shots (eight of them on goal), while McKenney and Bledsoe each scored twice. Christian Coler (Ionia, N.Y./Honeyoye Falls-Lima) added two assists. Garrison finished with five ground balls and three caused turnovers along with his goal, which was the second of his career.

Corgan Schaumburg (Rockton, Ill./Hononegah) stopped 13 of 23 Lake Forest shots, including two big saves in the final 61 seconds to help secure the win.

COACH'S COMMENT: "It was a great team win today," Calvin head men's lacrosse coach Dave Hoger said. "We played a hard-fought game against a great team. I was proud of the resiliency our guys showed and how we came together during times of adversity today. We are excited to learn from this game and get back to work this week."

NEXT UP: Calvin men's lacrosse will return to action on Friday, February 28, when it travels to Benedictine for a game scheduled to start at 4:00 PM (CT).
