ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Calvin University men's indoor track and field team competed at Grand Valley State University on Friday in its final tune up before next weekend's MIAA Indoor Championships.
The Knights posted a number of strong performances against competition from NCAA I and II programs to get ready for the conference meet next weekend.
On the track, both
Max Huizinga (Hudsonville, Mich./Calvin Christian) and
Keendrick Castillo-Perez (Comstock Park, Mich./Comstock Park) made the finals in the 60 meter dash. Huizinga took sixth in 7.13 seconds with Castilllo-Perez crossing in seventh place in 7.21.
Thaine Nederveld (Columbus, Ohio/Columbus Alternative) ran his fastest time of the season in the mile with a time of 4:14.78 to take 10th place. That time is good for fifth on the Calvin indoor all-time list.
Vaughn Meyer (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) finished 15th in 4:18.72, while
Abe VanDuinen (Pentwater, Mich./Pentwater) took 19th in 4:22.73.
Nick Henz (Oswego, Ill./Oswego East) and
Caleb Schillinger (North Liberty, Iowa/Liberty) both had strong runs in the 800 meters to take 10th and 11th place, respectively. Henz finished in 1:57.39 in his first race of the season, while Schillinger finished in 1:58.69.
Jaydon Gritters (Hudsonville, Mich./Covenant Christian) ran 2:01.56 to take 18th place.
Ethan Sculley (Byron Center, Mich./South Christian) and
Will Richardson (Stockton, Md./Snow Hill) both secured top 10 finishes in the 400 meters. Sculley finished in 52.29 in eighth place followed by Richardson in ninth at 52.81.
Ryan Sarkett (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) led a group of Calvin runners in the 3000 meters in 14th place in 9:18.93.
Eze Nwachuku (West Dundee, Ill./Dundee Crown) led a group of sprinters in the 200 meters with a 16th place finish in 23.27.
In the field events,
Ethan VanWoerkom (Denver, Colo./Denver Christian) finished second in the triple jump with a top jump of 11.64.
Hunter Bristow (Belding, Mich./Belding) took fifth in the high jump with a height of 1.79 meters, followed by
Zachariah Rubingh (Grand Rapids, Mich./The Potters House) in seventh with a height of 1.74 meters.
In the weight throw,
Matthew Toldy (Huron, Ohio/Huron) finished 14th with a top throw of 14.48 meters.
Carson Arnould (Hudsonville, Mich./Zeeland West) took 17th with a throw of 14.19 meters.
COACH'S COMMENT: "In the men's mile, we saw some great performances with Thaine, Vaughn and Abe all running great times and lifetime bests or indoor PRs," Calvin head track and field coach
Adam Haldorson said. "We had lots of other great performances across our event groups and overall today was exactly the meet we needed for the team to feel good going into the MIAA Indoor Championships next weekend."
