GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin University women's tennis team opened the spring portion of its schedule with a 6-1 win over Cornerstone University on Saturday afternoon in the Huizenga Tennis & Track Center.
Calvin (2-1) started the match with a sweep of the three doubles contests to secure one point. The number-one team of
Catherine Grissom (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) and
Marina Ribeiro (Santos Sal Paolo, Brazil/Santa Cecilia) won 6-4. The number-two team of
Julia Hooker (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) and
Ryan Morey (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) won 6-3, while the number-three team of
Rachel Grissom (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) and
Tessa Holman (Washington, Mich./Romeo) won 6-1.
In singles play, Calvin won five of six points. Ribeiro (6-3, 6-4), Hooker (6-2, 6-4), Morey (6-0, 6-0) and
Elise Norman (Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview) (6-0, 6-0) each won in straight sets, while
Catherine Grissom won a marathon third-set tiebreaker in number-two singles to win her match 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (15-13).
The Knights came close to sweeping the six singles contests, as well, but suffered one defeat as Holman fell in a very close third-set tiebreaker in the top spot 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (15-13).

Jon Goorhouse said. "There were a lot of pressure points and tiebreakers that give us good experience going forward, and it's a good feeling to start the spring off well with a win."
NEXT UP: Calvin women's tennis will return to action on Saturday, February 22, when it hosts Illinois Tech in a match scheduled to start at 3:00 PM in the Huizenga Tennis & Track Center.
